What is a CT Calcium Score?

🫀This is a non contrasted gated CT Chest exam for risk prediction

🫀If you have chest pain, the 1A recommendation is a CT Angiogram of the coronary arteries (see my last post on how to knock out 30 in an afternoon).

🫀Acquired in late diastole around 75% of cardiac cycle, in a low dose technique (less than 300mGy)
🫀Displayed in a soft tissue window.

Now what’s sneaky is that this isn’t a unique acquisition…this is literally a CT Chest WO (gated).

🫀The tech artificially coned down, centers at the heart with a 26cm ish wide FOV in a 256 matrix to make the pixel: attenuation isometric work for unit less scoring (Agatson).

🫀In most centers you do this during the “shoulder” hours of ops, early morning or late evening en masse.

🫀No prep, no meds.

🫀Depending on how fast your tech or Rad is on finalizing the report, you can preprocess on the PACS or have the tech circle the calcium and calculate the Calcium burden for low-intermediate risk determination for statin use.
