This is a funny article but the topic is deadly serious
The polycule teaching AI right from wrong cannot be trusted with choosing a digital morality for all of us, and we can't let them get away with it
Catherine Schell couldn’t survive multiple takes of Peter Sellers’ Bogart impression in Return of the Pink Panther (1975) without breaking.
Blake Edwards finally had to give up and leave them in the final cut.
“Here is lurking at you, kid.” 🤣
One of the victims of the Zizian trans death cult was their elderly landlord.
They bashed him on the head and then attacked him with knives and a sword. With barely any strength left, he managed to shoot them, killing one.
That deceased Zizian was honored in a U.S. Senate resolution about the "epidemic of violence toward transgender people." It was introduced by Democratic U.S. Sen. Mazie Hirono and other Democrats. https://t.co/rvO9Culc19
The intense backlash for plainly describing Mao as a dictator is an exercise in psychological conditioning.
Consider what is actually happening when activists insist that others affirm that biological males can become women.
Publicly endorsing claims that contradict observable evidence and common sense imposes a significant reputational cost on the speaker. That cost makes defection more expensive and demonstrates that the speaker is a fully committed member rather than a free-rider who might abandon the tribe when conditions change.
The more prima facie absurd the claim, the stronger the signal.
In this respect, “Mao was not a dictator” functions in the same way. Its defiance of readily available historical evidence turns it into a sacred shibboleth - those who affirm it at the expense of their own credibility show that the group’s moral authority supercedes everything else. It is therefore a mechanism for sorting the compliant from the non-compliant. The people who readily accept the claim or remain silent while others are punished for rejecting it, are those who prioritize commercial access, relationships, and social standing above dignity and truth.
The tremendous penalties incurred by Mbappé and La Liga for failing the slightest of slights on Mao’s legacy are meant to be noticed and internalized by everyone else. They illustrate the practical consequences of refusing to toe the line. What follows is a gradual narrowing of acceptable statements that foreign individuals can hold without commercial penalty.
You may not be a Chinese citizen, but you will live under their moral codes and law.
Each time someone subordinates evidentiary scrutiny to the demands of solidarity, this habit is reinforced.
Repeat a falsehood often enough, and the distinction between what is useful to believe and what is true begins to erode.

If Will Depue’s claims of full Slack access and employee impersonation at Anthropic are accurate, the potential damage would be severe.
Training methods, unpublished results, failed experiments and plans for future models could reveal what works, what doesn’t, and where the lab is heading. That knowledge could spare competitors expensive trial and error, even without access to model weights.
The ability to impersonate employees would create another risk: malicious requests could look like routine messages from trusted colleagues, potentially opening paths into other systems.
So yeah, if this turns out to be true, this is one of the biggest threads Anthropic will face to date.
Hee, wat toevallig. Nieuwe bevolking wil af van de cultuur van de oude bevolking en de eigen cultuur ervoor in de plaats stellen. Niemand op aarde had dit kunnen voorspellen. /s
@NicholasGillert In the same way that a lot of sovietologists were surprised to learn senior soviets *really were* chapter-and-book Marxist true believers when the records opened up, I think a lot of authoritarians don’t believe liberalism is an actual thing liberals believe.
At Nuremberg, American judges had to teach the Soviet judges about concepts such as “innocent until proven guilty.” The Soviets saw the trials as simply being about whether the accused went to the gulags or were taken out back with a pistol.
Most people aren’t prepared to learn just how different their cultures are from others, let alone realize the implications.
the funniest part is that trying to cancel someone for a meme that says Mao was a dictator has produced the largest global conversation about Mao being a dictator in decades
Ex-OpenAI researcher: "i'm hearing [the hackers] achieved full administrator access to slack (see every message) where literally every single research secret is contained"
anthropic is massively underplaying the recent security breach. i'm hearing cathedral achieved full administrator access of the slack workspace (see every message, log in as arbitrary users) where literally every single research secret is contained
to those unfamiliar: Ant & OAI keep literally everything in Slack. it sounds exactly the same incident that happened to OpenAI in 2023, where OpenAI was hacked by a random guy who got access to an access token from an external app service
"we're critical to national security, we must beat China, and yes we keep all our crown jewels in Salesforce's Slack messenger. yes we have admin API tokens everywhere. why do you ask?"
Decline happens fast. It only took a century for Britain to go from atop Olympus to the sort of hell characterized by the photo on the right
Free trade, the politics of envy and resultant expropriatory death and income taxes, and the death of its best men did that
Decisions matter. Leadership matters.
Even I thought body cams would shine a light on some substantial percentage of clear officer abuse, but it’s clearly negligible, while dangerous and erratic behavior by suspects is widespread. It is impossible to overstate how wrong BLM and reform activists were on this count.
I used to review officer-involved shooting reports generated by a D.A. explaining the decision to exonerate officers, and recall often thinking “I mean, could that *really* be how it went down?” I suspected there may be some fog of war or selective memory or post-hoc justification to give the officer a rational justification and paint the victim in a negative, irrational light.
But with the post-2020 adoption of body cams, I now believe it all. There is no behavior too insane for a huge number of suspects when confronted with literally any command by an officer requesting some form of compliance.
