Baclaran Church Rector Fr. Rico John Bilangel said the practice of visiting seven churches for Visita Iglesia was introduced by St. Philip Neri, in relation to the 16th century Roman custom of visiting seven major basilicas.

“Hanggang sa na-adopt ng different Christian Catholic communities ang pagbisita sa pitong mahalagang simbahan sa Roma o seven major basilicas,” he told The Philippine STAR.

Bilangel, however, clarified that Catholics can visit more than seven churches for Visita Iglesa.

“You can visit as many as you want kung magkakalapit lang naman ‘yung mga simbahan. Actually, in some practices, they do 14 churches based doon sa 14 Stations of the Cross,” he added.
