Me hizo reír mucho. Los hijos son la medida del tiempo♥️
wife has been walking around our apartment mumbling "a face... a fleet... a war... a man... a thought... a trick... a trick to break the walls of Troy..." to herself
Bom demais!
I watched Nolan's The Odyssey last night.
I believe it is the greatest cinematic homage to the operating system of Western civilization.
Our culture runs on stories, and the ancient Greeks supplied the fundamental Western question: know thyself.
Everything from Socratic dialogue to Augustine's Confessions to the novel is downstream of the conviction that the interior life is worth examining rigorously.
This is why I fundamentally disagree with @pmarca's view that introspection is a waste of time. Homer settled that argument 2,800 years ago.
The entire epic is the story of a supremely capable man learning, at brutal cost, that no amount of cunning gets you home if you don't know who you are.
The unexamined life doesn't just lose value. It loses its way.
Nolan's film works as a mirror to the viewer. Odysseus crosses the sea, but the real journey runs inward. Through grief, guilt, the wreckage of what war made him.
If you watch honestly, the film forces the same movement in you.
That's what serious art does: it doesn't hand you meaning, it demands that you metabolize it, with your full emotional and intellectual attention engaged at once.
And that demand is exactly what makes the film a quiet indictment of the present. Plenty of viewers will struggle with it, and I already see that in the comments online. Not for lack of spectacle, but because we've traded contemplation for stimulation.
Short-form content trained us to consume; this film asks us to sit with something. The capacity it requires, sustained attention turned both outward and inward, is the same capacity required for deep conversation, and for knowing yourself at all. It's the capacity we're bleeding out.
The Odyssey survived 2,800 years because every generation has to relearn how to come home.
The question the film asks isn't whether Odysseus makes it.
It's whether the West still knows how.
