Brazil's farm belt is about to get a road to the Pacific Ocean.

Today, Mato Grosso do Sul sells its pulp, soy, beef and corn to the world mostly through two Atlantic ports, Santos and Paranaguá.

From there, ships sail through the Panama Canal or around Africa to get to China and Japan.

The new route runs west instead.

It links two oceans, from the Port of Santos on the Atlantic to the ports of Antofagasta and Iquique on the Pacific.

Along the way it crosses São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul, Paraguay, northern Argentina and the Andes.

The whole road runs more than 3,000 kilometers, and about 2,400 of them lie between Campo Grande and the Pacific.

Its hardest stretch crosses the Chaco, a dry forest in western Paraguay.

Much of the road there was dirt, and trucks struggled to get through in both floods and drought.

Paraguay is now paving its last unpaved stretch, 224 kilometers long, toward the Argentine border.

The biggest missing piece was a river.

Between Porto Murtinho in Brazil and Carmelo Peralta in Paraguay, the only way across the Paraguay River has been by boat or ferry.

Brazil and Paraguay built a bridge to replace it.

It is 1,294 meters long, with towers 125 meters tall.

Itaipu, the giant dam the two countries share, paid for it through its Paraguayan side.

In July 2026, the two halves finally met in the middle.

The bridge is scheduled to be finished in September 2026, and Brazil's 13 kilometers of access road are scheduled for 2027.

Official estimates range from about 10 to 17 days saved on the trip to Asia.

A small Brazilian town of about 13,000 people is about to sit on a road that joins two oceans.

The concrete is nearly done, and the customs posts, truck yards and freight services the route needs are the next thing to build.
