"You are not compelled to have an opinion about this matter before you, nor to disturb your peace of mind at all. Things in themselves have no power to extract a verdict from you at all." -- "Remember Marcus Aurelius has already absolved you of the duty of having a take."
For years, the elite media has treated every successful tech startup as if it’s a fraud that needs to be exposed. But when the mother of all frauds actually comes along, they minimize and cover for it.
alex tabarrok MR post: very detailed argument explaining policy failure, lots of supporting evidence. Restrained yet forceful commentary
tyler cowen MR post: *esoteric quote on 1920s bangladashian train policy* "this explains a lot right now, for those of you paying attention"
Is there a lapel badge or secret hand shake that says, "I am a tourist in the USA and I have no idea how tipping works. The price on the sign should be the price I pay, Please don't hate me. Also, don't call it a gratuity if it's not gratuitous."
@robinhanson the logical(?) inconsistency is really jarring. if there are no people, there is no one to consider the 'for the sake of the planet'. what do these people expect, that there is some sort of earth spirit that will roam free?
The judge in Missouri v. Biden granted Plaintiffs' request to depose Dr. Fauci. The deposition will take place tomorrow, and we will be asking questions about his role in censoring the Great Barrington Declaration, its authors, & others who criticized his approach to Covid.
@skooookum if u not already doing it, I find that absolute focus for period that u are wrkng helps a lot. this means no other windows open, put phone away, reduce friction & incr b/w via kboard shrtcuts, etc. somebody said attention is our most precious resource, but very difficult to hold
@skooookum hav dealt w same thing, in addition to other excellent replies, find that we underestimate how much of an effect distractions & context switches have. getting back on track has huge hysteresis costs, esp from things that cause a change in emotions - email, twitter what have you.
Isn't there a signal here? Isn't this exactly how decentralisation works? Shouldn't one be looking at this as a data point and trying to fix the inherent volatility in pure decentralised markets?
I felt your tweet yesterday was in that direction, but there were many before, often worse; lots of engagement farmy CT hotshot types
In general, I don't think we should legitimize "trust me" rumor trading. It makes the space ripe for manipulation and may even create volatility.
Mastodon seems like a honeytrap for hall-monitor personality types. Honestly if Elon gets all the hall monitors to migrate to Mastodon that might be his greatest contribution toward the betterment of humanity.
Consider that Google has 187k (!) employees in 2022 (up from ~120k in 2020) and yet search is worse than ever, Hangouts/Meet sucks, Azure crushed GCP, and they lost the AI battle to OpenAI (despite inventing Transformers). Something went deeply wrong.
I'll probably have to say this a few times, but @robinhanson really answers a lot of cosmological questions with the Grabby Aliens model
we pretty much know that we are not alone!
I'll walk through it below 🧵
As someone that @elonmusk blocked for making the “negative”-and-true point that Teslas are fossil fuel cars, I do not find this comforting.
I‘m all for allowing users to curate their experience, but that’s very different from Twitter suppressing what its censors deem “negative.”
A first step is for the EPA to use a decision-making framework that considers ALL risks and side-effects regulations have, including damage to the economy in general and affordable energy in particular.
Had such a framework existed we wouldn’t have today’s electricity emergency.
Simple rules:
- No viewpoint discrimination, period.
- No government coordination, period.
- Speech must be *proven* false before it’s removed (and yes that’s very hard to do)
- Let users decide what censorship filters to apply.
This isn’t easy, but also not as hard as it sounds.
