Here’s how the world reacted to the Baltic Chain on this day in 1989, as two million people here turned their backs on Moscow to demand freedom.

This is proper journalism of a sort that’s sometimes lacking today.

The report is centred on the Baltic Chain protestors, reflects their perspectives about their own countries, and explains the historical context without the imperial lens. The Russian response is included, but not entitled to frame the entire story.

That’s how you do it.

The Baltic Chain protestors achieved something truly spectacular, despite no mobile phones, no social media, and with a brutal regime determined to stop them.

Two million people across Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania formed the world’s longest unbroken human chain of nearly 700km across our three then occupied nations.

When pictures of this circulate on social media today, it’s too often by engagement farming accounts that treat it as just a pretty spectacle of people coming together across borders.

It’s treated on the same level as that vacuous “World Clap Day” bullshit that’s been going around recently.

But the Baltic Chain had a real purpose and a real message for the world.

They were marking the half century anniversary of the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact, the criminal collusion between the Nazis and Soviets to divide up other people’s nations and pave the way for the aggression that sparked the Second World War.

The continued occupation of the Baltic countries half a century later meant that war wasn’t over. The Pact had to be fully annulled.

As the Baltic Chain organisers said in a statement on the day:

“…only then will Europe divest itself of the last colonies of the Hitler-Stalin era, and the Baltic nations will get the opportunity to determine their own destiny on the basis of free self-determination.”

“…one way or another, we have to solve it together, proceeding from the principles of international law. A common European home can only be set up if all European nations are granted a free right to self-determination.”

“Let us unite our voices and demand that Hitler-Stalin pacts together with their secret protocols be declared null and void from the very moment of their signing! Let us declare the annexation of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania unlawful!”

So the Baltic Chain was indeed spectacular, visually and logistically, and incredibly brave.

But the really, really world changingly spectacular thing they achieved wasn’t the hand holding alone.

It was the actual annulment of the Nazi-Soviet Pact, officially declared just a few years later, fully restoring their independent states, and ending the occupation.

Unlike those who cosplay anti-imperialism today on Twitter, people living under Soviet colonial occupation did describe it as such and actually did things that were anti-imperialist.

And, seriously, fuck that World Clap Day.

The world needs more people who take a stand for real values, hence why we will be marking tomorrow’s Ukrainian Independence Day too.

As then, still today: A common European home can only be set up if all European nations are granted a free right to self-determination.

This has been confirmed by several parties. The video is still available outside the EU.

@puheenaihefi podcast is a Finnish current affairs program with 60k subscribers. In this episode, Peter Sund, CEO of the Finnish Information Security Cluster (Kyberala ry) offered pointed criticism of the EU's new Chat Control directive, which was enacted under questionable circumstances.

Because the media is in Finnish, it is highly likely the censorship request came from a Finnish government official or a related party.

This makes it troublesome.

Because the Finnish constitution §12 guarantees freedom of expression.

Preventing political publications is a criminal offence: Abuse of Official Position, punishable by a fine or imprisonment for up to two years.

Chrome has a setting called "Continue running background apps when Google Chrome is closed."

It's ON by default. Even after you close Chrome, it keeps processes running that eat 500MB-1GB of your RAM.

Chrome -> Settings -> System -> turn this OFF.

You get more RAM back for your game and a smoother gameplay

Sentiments of Venezuelans

I’m going to say this once, and I don’t care if it makes people uncomfortable.

If you have never lived in Venezuela
If you did not grow up there
If you did not watch your country collapse in real time
If you did not stand in food lines
If you did not watch your parents lose everything they built
If you did not have to leave your home with nothing

Then shut the fuck up.

You do not have an opinion.
Your opinion does not matter.
And you don’t get to lecture anyone about what’s happening there.

I’m Venezuelan.
I lived there most of my life until my early twenties.
I watched my country go from a functioning democracy to full blown socialism right in front of my eyes.

This is not politics to me.
This is trauma.

Before socialism, Venezuela was not perfect, but it worked.
There was trade.
There was money coming in.
There was investment from the US.
There were jobs.
There was food.
There was medicine.

My family had five businesses.
We had our home
We had investments.
We had a future.

Then the government started nationalizing everything.
Private companies were taken.
Foreign investors were pushed out.
Imports were blocked.
Price controls destroyed production.
Corruption exploded.

And everything died.

Not slowly.
Violently.

People didn’t suddenly become poor because of “capitalism” or “the US” or whatever bullshit slogan people like to repeat online.

They became poor because socialism destroyed incentives, destroyed production, destroyed trust, and destroyed hope.

People today in Venezuela are not debating ideology.
They are trying to survive.

They are trying to find food.
Trying to find medication.
Trying to keep their families alive.

So when I see people in the West posting from comfortable homes, full fridges, stable currencies, and safe streets talking about “imperialism” or “US bad” or “Trump this or that”

No.
It’s not complicated.
You’re just ignorant.

China is not rebuilding Venezuela.
Russia is not rebuilding Venezuela.
Cartels are not rebuilding Venezuela.

They are stealing.
They are extracting.
They are draining what’s left.

If the US comes in and reinvests
If refineries get rebuilt
If infrastructure gets restored
If imports open back up
If food, water, and medicine become accessible again
If people can work and earn with dignity

Then yes.
Let them take all the oil they want.

Because at least something gets built instead of destroyed.

This is something to celebrate.
Not because it’s perfect.
But because for the first time in a long time, there is hope.

Hope that families can eat.
Hope that people don’t have to flee their country.
Hope that Venezuela can function again.

If you’ve never lived through a country collapsing
If you’ve never watched socialism destroy everything around you
If you’ve never had to leave your home because staying meant starvation

Then again
Shut the fuck up.

This isn’t theory.
This isn’t politics.
This is lived experience.
