@MelCooperPhD @PeriKurshan @leslievosshall I agree this is important. You are right that it effectively shortens the parental extension now and make an excellent point this could apply later. It’s backward thinking and we need clear policy now.
@PeriKurshan @bomba_ewa@leslievosshall Yes I was told same in a more wishy-washy way. I had a kid in 2016 as grad student, #2 in 2018 as postdoc and was told they can’t answer bc they don’t know if Covid extensions will still apply next year or be stacked. Zero help for planning K99 submissions. Tired of gambling
@PeriKurshan @leslievosshall Have been trying to figure out who to write to but think we need many voices. Having us pick either/or effectively eliminates the parental extension. This will cause a worse problem with retaining young female/mother investigators when it’s already bad enough.
@PeriKurshan @leslievosshall I’m in similar situation and have been trying to figure out who to write to. Childbirth extension for kid born 2018, K99 eligibility would be up next July and there is no way I’m getting in a competitive application by then due to Covid (had 2 kids under 5yo at home during).
one day I hope to be/feel✨ as prolific as Sally Ride and Bruce Voeller but this will truly do for now catch y’all on LITERAL TV. huge thanks to @NatGeoTV & the communities I’m fighting for everyday
😭🖤✨
@JTroyLittleton I had my first child while getting my neuroscience PhD. An understanding and supportive mentor makes all the difference. Not sure I would've/could've stayed in research, otherwise. I hope I'm in the position to do this for my trainees one day!
we love a thank you note & even more so we love the mentors that made our dreams reality 🖤
Check out this open letter written by me @RackebT@NeuroCurls & @FutureDrDukes to past/current/future mentors of Black Trainees

One of the most important articles this year.
We can’t just keep waiting for vaccines for another 6 months. We can’t just say lockdown as the solution. We must give ppl the tools they need to be safe. Yet we choose to withhold them.
