@may_gun Fair, and I totally hear that and agree, but I always run events with a $0 budget and know auto-captions aren’t good enough. So perhaps there just aren’t any free resources? I wonder where those may be developed??
@may_gun From my experience running events its a funding/resource issue. Do you have a list of free and reliable interpretation/ability resources for webinars/zoom meetings/ live symposia that small student groups can be using to address this issue?
@may_gun (For more context) the spotlights feature new UCD plant faculty who weren’t spotlighted the previous year and the new faculty this year were 2 white men. As hiring decisions are coming out about now, hopefully next year this won’t be the case!
#virtualhangout We had a cake #bakeoff challenge via zoom! Amber was our judge but we all win because now we all have cake. Except Anna I guess who apparently hates cake?
It says a lot about academia's toxic culture if the immediate response to "how are you?" during a pandemic is related to research productivity. #justsaying#AcademicTwitter
Whenever I ask other grad students how they're doing with #COVID19, the most common response is about lack of productivity.
A global pandemic is NOT normal. It's OK if you're not productive. It's OK if you're just making it through each day. Prioritize your wellness. #phdchat
I usually view my twice weekly #physicaltherapy appts as healthy mental breaks from research...until they start scraping up my scar tissue with a glorified butter knife
Why #scicomm matters: Just re-explained to my fairly science-literate mom that organic farmers can use pesticides & only certain types are banned. She felt the nomenclature was misleading. Yes & no; the rhetoric is just very confusing on all sides.
Quick #scicomm read. Lessons learned: Don't argue with beliefs. Listen. Learn what people really think. "A willingness to show vulnerability...that we science folks are willing to listen and receive criticism, boosts credibility...". Thanks @plantaximena https://t.co/Qshd0ew9Kd
#DEB263 Live oral polio vaccines are given to quickly halt outbreak transmission abroad, but can mutate and cause the disease in small number of cases. Injections don't run this risk, but cost more. Medicine isn't perfect, but is saving the masses. https://t.co/MH6zXmTkg2
#DEB263 Great out-of-my-field talk from @tinajeoh@CIFAR#futurefood conference about new "CoCo Process" of preserving bioactive compounds in dehydrated microcapsules for shelf-stability and scalability. Potential for drug delivery, microbiome work, etc. https://t.co/AoCNwfTg5e
