After Bola Tinubu won the 2023 presidential election, some people allegedly started deliberately increasing the prices of goods they imported from China, simply because they were bitter about the election.

Ask them why the price suddenly went up and the response was:

“No be you vote for Tinubu?” 😂

So apparently, even the customer who didn’t vote for Tinubu must now pay the political tax.

But with Chinese businesses and manufacturers increasingly looking directly at the Nigerian market, maybe the game is changing.

This isn’t really how FTZ works. A Free Trade Zone is not a special customs lane where Chinese companies bring goods into Nigeria and pay a fraction of what Nigerians pay.

The whole point is that goods brought into the zone are treated differently from goods being imported directly into Nigeria’s customs territory. An approved company can bring in machinery, raw materials, components and other inputs without paying the normal import duty at that point. That is an incentive for companies to operate and manufacture from the zone.

But if you take finished goods sitting in that zone and move them into the Nigerian customs territory for local consumption, you have a different customs transaction. The fact that the goods passed through an FTZ does not automatically make them duty free in the Nigerian market.

And this is not something available to Chinese companies because they are Chinese. A Nigerian company that qualifies and operates within the FTZ regime gets the same basic customs treatment.

Okay, but why is it your undisputed right to be between the Chinese manufacturers and Nigerians? If the system is more efficient without you, why must the government create a space for you at the expense of the customers, who are also Nigerian?

You bought a car for ₦27m and sell it for ₦30m. You make ₦3m in profit, which means ₦3m stays in Nigeria, and that is good. But in the other case, the Chinese sell directly to the customer for ₦26m. The customer saves ₦4m, which means ₦4m stays in Nigeria, which is even better.

In both cases, Nigeria hasn’t industrialized. We are still not making our own cars. So what am I missing?

Let me guess: people would lose their livelihoods and they wouldn’t be able to feed their families.

But that is not guaranteed. Business disruption happens all the time. We used to have NITEL, and NITEL also had employees who were Nigerians. But when GSM came, it disrupted everything and put many of them out of work. The economy simply adapted. The government didn’t block GSM because some people would lose their livelihoods. And when GSM came, it opened an entirely new market that employs far more Nigerians, by a factor of 100.

So either way, we are going to be fine, and a lot more Nigerians will benefit from the lower prices than those who would lose out.

- You started selling polo shirts for 85k.

- You started selling phones with 500k markup.

- You started giving out hotel rooms in dead and economically handicapped cities like Benin, Owerri, Asaba, Calabar, for 100k a night.

- You started selling soggy and oily rice in plastic plates for 15k

When you're asked why, you will say "I know my target audience"
