We wouldn’t call our fathers or elders by first name. That cultural expression of respect isn’t backwardness.

We can modernise without becoming culturally Western.

IMO: Life is unfair and starting points are unequal. Some people have stronger advantages than others. But everyone has some leverage they can develop. Focusing on what others have won won’t move you forward, compounding your own leverage might.
