I think everyone including European analysts understand what it means when someone says "athleticism". Just yesterday Darren Fletcher called Nuno Mendes potentially the best "athlete" at the WC, talking about his speed, explosiveness, quickness, and strength. Modric, Iniesta, Xavi, etc are not the strongest, fastest, or quickest compared to other footballers
@norfwesss@Niccolascito@DareKami I mean would you have preferred me to use the 300 pound offensive linemen when comparing speed to Kylian Mbappe? ๐๐
You're missing my point. Nobody is saying Mbappe isn't fast, 4.4 is very quick for your average joe. I'm using Nfl metrics because it shows that while there are plenty of athletes out there that are faster than Mbappe, almost none are better footballers than him. He didnt get to where he is today just by being fast.
Balon d'ors are given to the best overall player, there is a reason why the golden boot and balon d'or are different awards. There is a reason why elite goalscorers like Lewandoski, Kane, Haaland, Suarez, don't have one. If you are saying currently Ronaldo does not do much other then score that is fair. But during the decades where he was competing with Messi, he was not just a goal scorer
100%. But if you take away their speed, they are still high level players. Kyle walker is not as quick as he once, but still playing in the Prem, Cristiano has lost his speed and is still bagging goals in World Cups. You take away their intelligence and their technical ability they would be pissing about in Sunday League.
This is the big problem with VAR. With normal refereeing, everyone knows there will be mistakes, but referees try balance their calls to ensure a fair game. With VAR, there is literally 0 excuse to get a call wrong, and yet we still see it. Plus the referee can't do anything about it if he makes a mistake.
You're right, they aren't better analysts because they were better players. They are better analysts because they were MUCH better players. Ibra and Henry were dominating top leagues and challenging for individual awards and the most prestigious titles over a decade while Lalas played for a bottom table Serie A team for two years during the 1990s. They have a better tactical and technical understanding of the game because that is the difference between players of Zlatan and Henry's caliber and Lalas' caliber.
Maybe you are thinking of his later years but prime ronaldo was not just a goalscorer. I would actually argue when he turned into more of only a goalscorer he started fall in the balon dor rankings. He was so dangerous 1v1, his ball striking was among the best in the world, he was technical and skillful. And Messi had an equal if not better team around him for many years.
@ThoniTM@talkSPORT I am saying he is top 2. But its sad to see how people talk about him because their opinions are based on his later years forgetting everything he did over his career.
Yes the question was can the US hang with these teams. Ivory Coast was the better team for the first 70 minutes and then lost on a 90th minute winner. That should tell you that Germany is a team that the US could hang with. Nobody is saying they would beat Germany every day of the week, but it would be competitive.
