Just days after he and his partner shared the heartbreaking news that they had lost their unborn child, Gakpo chose to pull on the Netherlands shirt and found the net against Morocco.

The result wasn’t enough to keep the Netherlands in the tournament, but Gakpo’s goal and reaction will live long in the memory as a moment that transcended the match it was played in.

He collapsed to the floor, overcome with emotion. His teammates immediately surrounded him in support. At full-time, the Moroccan players were there to console him too.

Gakpo’s resilience and strength is a credit to him and his family. His goal was a deeply moving tribute, and an inspiration to anyone that has gone through anything similar.
