Labor Day exists because a hundred and thirty years ago this country decided the people building it deserved a day named after them, not just the people running it.

That's still worth being proud of. Every country has workers. Not every country treats building something with your hands as dignity.

Most bosses only ever learn to manage labor. Fewer learn to steward people.

Managing labor asks what someone can produce today. Stewarding people asks what they'll be capable of a year from now, and whether you were the reason they got there or the reason they left.

I went bankrupt once. Home in foreclosure. One vehicle repossessed, the other saved from it more than once. Utilities shut off every other month. But it was one of the greatest moments of grace I ever received.

Once I decided I could lose the house, lose the car, and still start over, even rent a room in someone's basement or sleep on someone's couch, the fear went with it.

Attachment to those things is what keeps a man paralyzed, afraid, and making bad decisions just to protect what he has.

Once you're willing to let it all go, you stop doing things out of fear and start doing them because they're right, because they're the work you actually want to build a life around.

I found that this life is fundamentally different from the one I lived before.

You can just start again.

Burn your bridges. Go bankrupt. Let people get mad. Let go of everything you've built. Experience the death of your ego. Feel like crap. Hit rock bottom.

But then comes the hard part. Know you can start from scratch and figure it out. Believe in yourself. Enjoy starting again. Fall in love with being a beginner.

Most people don't want to start again. They hold onto the past until it sucks the life out of them. They try to hold onto the little they have which prevents them from having the riches they're capable of getting.

They fail to take risks. They refuse to change. They can't pivot. They hate iterating. They do the work they do to impress others instead of impress themselves.

Sometimes the best decision is to burn your life to the ground to see what's left. Only in the darkness will you find the light again.

It's powerful to start again. Restart.
