Happy birthday to Paul Westerberg, whose intuitive feel for the economic and social underdog informs the subtle politics of his best material. Here is a piece I wrote for The New Yorker, about the workingman's blues at the heart of the Replacements' 'Tim.' https://t.co/JXKARrSD8d
Wednesday's Newsletter on Peter Seidler and John Fisher has gotten a great response, so I've made the entire piece FREE at the Web site. (Link in bio because Twitter is broken.)
Thanks to @sean_forman, @jposnanski, @craigcalcaterra and more for the push.
@andrew_leach For me it was the former. The platitudes, the trust-us-even though-we-clearly-don't-have-a-plan tone. They've tried it so many times before. This was once too many. Couldn't believe they thought this was an adequate response. So condescending.

Intriguing look at the young lefty. Utilizes the side-arm slot, had feel for all his pitches throughout his pen.

There's always been a better way to run elections, it's called proportional representation, and over 85 other countries, including 80% of the OECD, already use it.
@editaurus I stumbled upon them at a festival in 2015, not knowing much about them. Grew confused then angry that the crowd was enthralled with something so dull. Context: was coming down off the exhilaration of a Buzzcocks set.
Something like a concept album about squandered promise, The Replacements 'Tim' speeds through the entire Springsteen-emotional circuit of wildly misspent youth to washed-up dotage in a breathtaking thirty-five minutes. Bus rides and long nights. Hard days of nothing much at all.
Dear Hockey Gods,
The rest of Canada is starting to think what you’re doing to the Maple Leafs may have gone too far.
It’s funny — don’t get me wrong.
But maybe it’s gone on a bit long.
I’m not saying the Cup… but maybe a round?
Sincerely,
A Habs Fan
