@USAMamaHeather1@mattvanswol Of course this caused damages , the riots in 2023 caused around a billion in damages. The perpetrators were largely the same social groups. What is kind of new is the looting of luxury boutiques. I m just questioning the narrative of France being taken over.
@USAMamaHeather1@mattvanswol Massive brain drain from africa to france. While this is not only a french happening its quite pronounced. From a human point of view its understandable - those ppl already speak the language and can earn 20 times more than at home
@USAMamaHeather1@mattvanswol I give you one example. A lot of medical doctors and nurses from former french colonies are actually leaving their country to work in france because they can pursue a better life. This is basically fucking over those countries
@USAMamaHeather1@mattvanswol There are quite some european countries with far more immigrants than france without those issues. France is paying the price for colonizing african countries and the following stupid politics. There are enormous issues within french society that are not mainly due to immigration
@USAMamaHeather1@mattvanswol Well the palestinian flags are just nonsense but yeah its pretty normal they burn down stuff and are attacking the police. Macron reacted like other presidents did before
@USAMamaHeather1@mattvanswol The violent protests I remember were started for various reasons but it really doesnt need much sometimes. Once it was because the police chased two young guys from a suburb and they died in an accident, once it was due to a tax rise on gas
@USAMamaHeather1@mattvanswol I think the answer to that is not a clear yes or no. A lot of progressives claim that they fully do but I think both is happening. Its also true that a huge amount of them is living in shit conditions. Their schools are bad, the french system is failing them
@USAMamaHeather1@mattvanswol Also the french are somehow notorious for rioting. I cant remember a time people were ever content with the political situation.
@USAMamaHeather1@mattvanswol As I said - you have significant numbers of people living in disenfranchised communities that are impoverished. Contrary to the french ideal its actually quite difficult to get out of those communities. Every now and then there massive violent protests especially in those areas
@USAMamaHeather1@mattvanswol Yes, this is simplified but you have a huge nbr from northern africa (morocco/algeria/tunesia) that are muslims and then the other bigger group is from southern african countries like senegal/cote d ivoire/cameroun - typically christians
@USAMamaHeather1@mattvanswol To this day former colonies are the main source of immigrants. France has a population of approx 70 mio ppl, there are around 400 k of immigrants per year. Around a third of french citizens are 2nd or 3rd generation immigrants from colonies. Thats nothing new.
@USAMamaHeather1@mattvanswol A couple of dozen hurt officers, hundreds of arrests - i m not aware of major economic damage. Its unfortunate but it happens every couple of years. Some of them were far worse. Its a recurrent issue that erupts for a variety of reasons that are more or less excuses
@USAMamaHeather1@mattvanswol This means: a significant amount of french born citizens are of maghrebinian or african heritage, and they often live in disenfranchised suburbs. The struggles caused by that are in no way new.
@USAMamaHeather1@mattvanswol Heather the issue is not recent immigrants - france, contrary to a lot of other european nations, was a colonial power. When the colonies became independent in the 60s and 70s france loads of people from those colonies immigrated to france
@_gissoo@mattvanswol Why are you completely making this up? What open border policy are you talking about? Seriously - enlighten me. I live like 200 miles away from those protests and your claims sound like complete bullshit to me. The only thing I can agree with is that young Italians struggle
