Onwards, comrades, our work is not done!!
Since gaining independence 60 years ago, these will go down as the most significant and consequential two weeks of our nation’s life. Defying well-entrenched divisions along ethnic, political, regional, gender, class, and religion, the youth of this country mobilised and marched in the streets, crying in unison, Give our country back! A regime founded on falsehoods and fake promises nearly faltered, only surviving by unleashing goons and boots on the ground to forestall citizens’ unstoppable march. This is the beginning, not the end, and a good time to pause and reflect on the gains that the people of Kenya have made in the last fortnight.
#LestWeForget, we must all be proud of the following achievements:
-A generational shift of energy and agency. We managed to galvanise Kenyans beyond tribe! #WeAreNotOurParents
-Total Rejection of an oppressive, inhumane and insensitive Finance Bill 2024, a first in Kenya and Africa
-Fundraised 25 million shillings in one day to support injured protestors and families of our fallen Shujaaz.
-President’s public commitment to removal of unconstitutional offices including office of the First Lady, Second Lady and Third Lady.
-We were heard; We will be heard. We are hard to ignore. Together we shall move the country forward. #WeAreNotOurParents
-Leaderless but not without leadership! Self-mobilised and self-organised. We showed up for one another in powerful ways. Healthcare workers, faith leaders and institutions etc Salut!
-Peaceful protests and zero looting
-Political consciousness - we are more aware! And we need to stay alert
We know our leaders better. And their phone numbers too!
-Occupy Churches - we are taking back Kenya and leading by example
-Changing conversation about citizenship, not just in Kenya but in the entire continent
-We are now watching debates in Parliament and Senate, and they are discussing issues we raised. We set the agenda for the nation!
-MPs have publicly rejected an insensitive annual salary increment! PSC must act to effect.
-Celebrities and influencers were part of the movement!
-Our (f)lying President has not left the country in weeks, unbelievable! Now he can focus on the work Kenyans elected him to do.
-More powerful public participation on multiple digital platforms. Tiktok, ChatGPT, Insta - We celebrate the innovation and the heroes breaking this information for us and in different languages too! Tunawapenda, endeleeni vivyo hivyo!
-Young lawyers - a whole battalion coming out to defend us - shout out to our amazing LSK President, the LSK fraternity who showed up every single day. And all partners and volunteers.
-Our gallant doctors and nurses and all who made their training and experience and brilliance available, despite the dangers, in public interest. That’s what patriotism looks like.
-To the media for highlighting our struggle and the issues that matter.
-For the first time in history politicians, we have put politicians in their place. We donate our power to them, they must defer to the people who elect them.
-The innovation and creativity in new forms and arts of resistance, from occupying churches, to speaking up and grabbing microphones from politicians. Tuendelee ama Tusiendelee!!
-A memorial concert to mourn our departed s/heroes!!
Our work is not done; we demand the following:
-Strict adherence to the Constitutional right to life and peaceful protests
-Immediate reconstitution of the IEBC
- Continuous voter registration
- Opportunities for the youth
- Full disclosure of the National Debt Register
- Bring back Linda Mama
- Sacking of non-performing public officials immediately
- Remove all unconstitutional offices
- Remove the Housing levy
- Repeal SHIF and fix NHIF
Ecstatic. Feels like the start of something huge today. Ten Hag has walked in and worked miracles. Something no one could get close to in almost almost a decade. Feels like we've hit the jackpot with him.
