Yesterday, we proudly launched the Youth in Local Governance (YoLoGo) initiative at the Western Provincial Council. This is a major step towards institutionalising youth participation in governance across the Western Province.

This pioneering programme will establish youth advisory councils and focal points in all 49 local authorities, ensuring that young voices are not only heard but shape decisions at the grassroots.

We were honoured to welcome H.E. the High Commissioner of Canada @CanHCSriLanka, the Deputy Minister of Youth Affairs @ErangaGunaseka2, the Deputy Minister of Provincial Councils & Local Government, and Mr. Phillip Gonzalez @phillgonzalez1, Senior Director of the Forum for Federations @ForumFed, to mark this historic moment.

Today I was pleased to meet with Mr. Phillip Gonzalez @phillgonzalez1, Senior Director for the Indo-Pacific Region at the Forum for Federations @ForumFed ahead of next week’s official launch of the Youth in Local Governance (#YoLoGo) initiative in the Western Province.

This programme will establish 98 elected youth councillors as Youth Focal Points and 10 member Youth Advisory Committees in all 49 local authorities of the Western Province. It will create formal pathways for young people to participate in governance and community development.

Our youth must be empowered not only as future leaders but as present-day changemakers. YoLoGo is a bold step in realising H.E. the President’s @anuradisanayake vision of a youth-driven and inclusive Sri Lanka.

Simultaneous matches for squash, badminton, and table tennis promoted inclusivity, with a special badminton match between girls and boys.

YoLoGo successfully organized a "Small Scale Photo Voice Exhibition" with the support of Forum of Federations and the collaboration of GIZ. Mr. Fahad Shahbaz Warraich, Focal Person, Prime Minister Youth Program, Punjab was the Chief Guest where he expressed support to YoLoGo.

This index is interesting - I wonder how much these rankings would change depending on questions around subnational level governments trust or perhaps services people receive or value?!

On September 19, 2023, the YoLoGo together with the Forum of Federations, conducted a briefing for the program called Support to Youth Participation and Local Governance at the Pakistan Study Centre, University of Punjab.
