From October 1, government says TRAFFITECH-GH cameras will start catching traffic offences and sending us fines.
Okay 👍🏾 .
Now point some of those cameras at the potholes too. When a pothole is reported, let the authority responsible also receive a message:
“You have 14 days to fix this road.”
If they don’t, there should be consequences too because how can the system find us, send us a notice, give us a deadline and punish us for missing it but when the streetlight has been dead for years or the road has been destroying tyres and putting lives in danger, we are the ones told to be patient?
The ordinary Ghanaian cannot always be the only one with a deadline. Government must have deadlines too. 🇬🇭
Before your cameras catch drivers at night, remember some of those same roads have been left in darkness for years. Where are the streetlights?
We are not saying people should break the law. Punish dangerous driving but where is this same energy when the system puts our lives in danger?
A streetlight can stay dead for years. A pothole can sit there until somebody gets hurt. A dangerous road can remain dangerous until people accept it as normal.
No camera. No deadline. No fine. Nobody is punished.
Then when the ordinary Ghanaian makes a mistake, suddenly the camera works, the system works and the punishment is ready.
That is the disrespect. So the system that couldn’t see our suffering can suddenly see our offence?
Don’t only remember that we exist when it is time to collect money from us. Remember us when it is time to keep us alive too. SMH
