Today is an important day, with the publication of advice from @neso_energy on the requirements of clean power by 2030.
It’s brilliant analysis.
The headline is that it’s achievable, while maintaining security of supply, but only if we get a move on.

We’ve published our independent analysis to advise @energygovuk how to achieve Clean Power in 2030. Read about the challenging hurdles that need to be overcome and the benefits to consumers, the economy and society, including our energy security that doing so could deliver. 👇
A new era for the clean energy industry.
The UK is investing in carbon capture technology in Teesside and Merseyside.
✅ 4,000 new jobs
✅ Accelerate towards net zero
✅ £21.7 billion investment

Today is the first day of a permanently coal-free GB power system.
This is a monumental achievement given we relied on coal for ~40% of our power just 12 years ago.
Credit to all involved in this major milestone for the transition.
After 142 years of helping power our country, the coal power station at Ratcliffe-on-Soar has closed & the UK becomes the first major economy to phase out coal power.
Future plans include a low carbon energy centre which would create jobs and investment:

After today’s bumper AR6 results, we move to the advice from @NationalGridESO in Autumn as the next milestone for Clean Power 2030.
Thanks to @FintanSlye_eso and his team for their work with industry to develop this advice. This open letter explains the approach they are taking.

In @ConversationUK talking offshore wind:
“Tech costs won’t fall indefinitely…to lower the cost of the entire fleet of projects for net zero…emphasis needs to shift to efficient project delivery rather than a sole focus on tech innovation.”
https://t.co/HIlUaaBZae
“While energy costs are finally falling, bills this winter will still be 78% higher than the pre-crisis average. Government should take ambitious steps to deliver affordable change in both the near and long-term"

Next week we'll publish our latest report with @UCL_ISR on lowering the cost of energy bills while delivering decarbonisation.
Watch @PhillMcNally@UCL_ISR in our upcoming webcast outline the savings one of our key recommendations could provide households 👇
Also can’t help but be frustrated by this spin…
They fail to mention capacity is 76% lower than the previous round.
Some quick math shows expected generation even worse due to the higher load factor of offshore wind - 82% lower than AR4 😑
Today’s CfD AR5 results mark the lowest point in UK climate policy in at least a decade.
With no new capacity, and existing projects pulling the plug due to cost pressures, the UK is effectively moving backwards on offshore wind - the supposed backbone of the future system.
What does this mean for future rounds?
AR6 & AR7 will need to deliver ~24GW of offshore wind (AR4 = highest to date with 7GW).
But most importantly, AR6 must restore investor confidence. With other nations ramping up renewables policy, investment will simply go elsewhere.
Today is the final chance to submit nominations for this year’s YEP Awards.
If you know someone who has gone above and beyond over the last year, please do nominate them & recognise their achievements.
The only requirement is <10 years experience in the sector 🏆
‼️ Last chance to nominate somebody or apply for an award category at the #YEPAwards23 - nominations close tomorrow ⌛️
If you have a last minute application, and are worried that you won't meet the deadline, please email [email protected] for more information.
Some years ago I became convinced that risk-underwriting was key to the international climate finance we need. Took a lot longer to understand why the MDBs couldnt do it. Now at last we may have the chance, at scale. Great to get this in Friday's FT!
A massive thank you to everyone who attended our #YEPForum 10 Year Anniversary event!
It was great to see and hear from so many familiar faces from the last decade, as well as so many new ones who will help power the #energy industry into the future!
Here's to the next 10 🙌
🚨Applications for #YEPAwards23 are now open🚨
The UK's leading awards, highlighting the work of early career professionals across the #energy industry, are open for nominations.

Tonight's the night 🎉
This evening, the YEP Forum is holding its Parliamentary Summer Reception, hosted by @BimAfolami MP.
We are delighted to be joined by @grantshapps MP and @ClemCowton of @OctopusEnergy, who are kindly sponsoring this event.
We hope to see you there!
