Biblical justice is giving people what they deserve. It is both retributive (the just and equitable accountability someone deserves), as well as restorative (the just and equitable access someone deserves as a person created in God’s image).

Without Good Friday, our judgment day is before us in the future. But because of the cross, judgment day can be behind us in the past. “It is coming,” which produces fear and striving, is changed to “It is finished,” which produces peace and rest.

Today kicks off Holy Week. I'll never get over the impact of the gospel on my life. I'm a perfectionist by nature, and often fear that my best won't be enough. But the events of this week changed everything about the way I relate to myself, to others, and to my work.

When Jesus declared "It is finished," he introduced the language of grace. Because his sacrifice was perfect, I don't have to be. Now I work from a place of rest, knowing that the incomplete tasks of my day are multiplied by grace to be more than enough.

Life doesn’t always give us what we want. That’s one of the reasons fasting is so practically relevant to discipleship. It’s an intentional practice in self denial that strengthens our impulse to turn to God when our flesh is denied.

When engaging in polarizing issues the follower of Jesus would do well to ask:

Am I uneasy with this perspective because it runs contrary to Jesus' life & message, or am I uneasy with this perspective because it challenges the long held assumptions I've carried?

Two types of characteristics describe God. Incommunicable characteristics belong to Him alone (omnipotence, omniscience and omnipresence). But his communicable characteristics are contagious. To become more like Him, we’ve got to remain in Him.

Desperation is often the unseen force that drives us to God. But it’s a poor long term strategy. If our desperation never deepens into desire, we will lose interest in God once we regain some control over our lives. “I need God” has to become “I want God!”

Christianity is different in that it changes WHY we obey God. The wonder of the gospel transforms our motives from duty to desire. If you find yourself trying to live for God because you have to, try this prayer - “God, I want to want to!”
