I’ve worked in client services my entire adult life. I’m desi, with a quasi-Aussie/slightly British. I get this all the time when clients have spoken to me on the phone/then meet me in person. I’m a counsellor, so I can’t say shit to them about their casual racism.

It’s odd that I need to say this, but white people — when you meet someone for the first time that you’ve previously just spoken to over the phone or in email — “I didn’t know you were Black” is not an appropriate greeting. Ever.
