With Hillier, Aro, Farquhar, Atkin to understand how to convert photons and gasses into sugars. Loving science, policy, oxygen and everything in between.
@sourbeerdough Thilo you introduced me to the shower beer and i still love it. Something so extravagant about hot water pouring down your outside and cold flavour running through the inside
@LouisaEsdaile 'Amount' is quite a vague description Louisa.... admittedly nutrition and flavour density looks good in that trolley. But increased energy density could be achieved through stronger commitment to canned beans :)
In contrast to C3 plants, increasing content of SBPase in C4 plant does not improve photosynthesis. This is important for understanding regulation of carbon fluxes in the C4 system. Thanks to co-authors @SvonCaemmerer@rainc_CAR1@bobfurbank@LopezCalcagno and funds @leaf2field
This is a step forward. It helps understand how chloroplast energetics are poised and buffered against acute environmental changes but resilient to chronic shifts. It suggests pathways for mitochondria to interact with the chloroplast. #plantphys
Our data shows that hydrogen peroxide can only ACCUMULATE at PSI. We agree it may form anywhere along the chloroplast ETC. But if it doesn't accumulate, it can't participate in a direct retrograde signal. The old models are wrong and based on an artifact!

We previously showed DNP-INT doesn't inhibit electron transport to PSI - it fails to block CO2 assimilation or spectroscopic PSI reduction. Now we show previous work using DNP-INT measured H2O2 artifacts from still active PSI! Retrograde H2O2 signal conveys a PSI acceptor limit.
@GMEstavillo@LICOR_ENV@CSIRO I am finding that #li600 can provide great gsw data. We saw no differences between our mutants with #li6800, in the stanardised atmosphere it creates. But under their actual environmental conditions, #li600 really highlighted their differences. Quick to measure, easy to use.
Vesa Havurinne, MSc. Doctoral Student, Esa Tyystjärvi Group, has imaged the prettiest photosynthetic sea slugs! 🐌

Third year @BiologyANU plant science prac. 6 mutants, 6 groups, 6 @LICOR_ENV 6800s, @flir, (>$500k in hardware), 8 highly qualified plant scientist demonstrators. No masks. Why would you study anything else? @PlantSci_ANU, @scienceANU
Exciting opportunity for a four year PhD position, devleoping water oxidation catalysts with @cheahhonmun, Uppsala Uni @uppsalauni in Sweden! Nordic PhDs are so well funded and supported, and water oxidation catalysts may change the world! Apply! RT!

Outstanding work, demonstrating the value of developing new experimental techniques to interrogate the small details and improve our assumptions. @DiegoMa_rquez has shown us the path forward in gas exchange precision @NaturePlants
New paper out in @NaturePlants with Hilary Stuart-Williams and @GrahamDFarquhar. Our theory is a more precise physical approach to the electrical resistance analogy for gas exchange, including the cuticular fluxes.

@botbml @MelanieCarmody Well he didn't lose everything. Check out the two large borosilocate glass measuring cylinders that melted into each other during the fire..... he kept them on a plinth!
The first step for ancient man towards modern civilisation was probably construction of rain proof shelters. Are Australian tradies, protected by government subsidy, consistantly unable to build a leak proof roof, regressing that far? Get your shit together, you have one job!
