🌿 FABI Friday Feature
This week we spotlight Austropuccinia psidii – the rust fungus behind Myrtle Rust, a serious threat to Myrtaceae species. #FABIFriday
Meet NRF-funded Sithembile Kunene, a PhD student at @UPTuks: https://t.co/m50SsPX7oB
Her research is contributing to a better future by advancing sustainable forestry practices and enhancing plant resilience against diseases.

@SwedeninKE The travel purpose is to attend a conference from the 8th to 10th of July 2025 in Tartu, Estonia. My travel date is the 6th of July 2025. I kindly request an expedition of this application so I can attend the conference. Thank you.
@vfsglobalcare The application was received on the 19th of June 2025. I was told that it takes two days to deliver the application but in this case, it took more than that. I am concerned as my travel is almost here (6th of July 2025). I therefore request an expedition of this application
Origin?
Still uncertain — but suspected to be linked to regions where Eucalyptus is native (Australia and nearby islands).
📚 Ongoing research at FABI is working to better understand & manage this pathogen.
#FABI#PlantHealth
Where & when?
🌍 Found in Mpumalanga & KwaZulu-Natal
💧 Appears soon after rain
🌞 Trees recover during dry periods
🧬 Affects Eucalyptus species, especially in cooler, higher-altitude areas
#ForestrySouthAfrica
The fungus:
🔬 Slow-growing colonies
Grows best at 25 °C
🧫 Produce orange to red-pigmented toxin on media
🧪 Still relatively unknown biologically
📍 First reported in in 2023
#FungalDisease
Severe infections cause:
⚠️ Girdled, distorted shoots
⚠️ Crinkled leaves
⚠️ Loss of apical dominance
⚠️ Epicormic shoots
⚠️ Eventual death of susceptible clones after repeated infections
#PlantPathology
What does it look like?
ESSM affects young leaves and shoots the most.
Early symptoms:
🔸 Small, brown-black necrotic spots
🔸 Surrounded by yellow halos
🔸 Deformation & curvature of leaves
🔸 Shot-hole effect from dried lesions

For this week’s FABI Friday Feature, we’re highlighting a new threat to South African Eucalyptus plantations: Eucalyptus scab and shoot malformation (ESSM) caused by Elsinoe necatrix (Indonesia) & E. masingae (South Africa).
