The civilian who tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen during the mass shooting at a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach has been identified as 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed, a local fruit shop owner and father of two. Witnesses and video footage show Ahmed advancing on the armed attacker, placing him in a headlock, and seizing the shotgun, giving families time to escape. He was shot twice during the intervention and is hospitalized, with relatives saying he is awaiting surgery.
Authorities say the attack left at least 12 people dead and dozens injured in what is being investigated as a targeted assault on a Jewish event.
