On International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, we remember every woman who has suffered a preventable childbirth injury because care came too late, too far away, or not at all.

As someone who previously spearheaded Somalia’s national campaign to end obstetric fistula and championed the Campaign on Accelerated Reduction of Maternal Mortality in Africa, I know that ending fistula requires investment, skilled maternal care, emergency obstetric services, and sustained public awareness.

Today, as Chair of the National Independent Human Rights Commission, I also reaffirm that women’s health is not a privilege. It is a right. Ending fistula is about dignity, equality, and the protection of women’s lives.
