@jordan26steele @TheSpec Sizing them correctly is very important. Mini splits are admittedly more efficient than my ducted variety (especially w the gas furnace as the air handler).
Mini splits are also great if you don’t have existing ducts.

@TheSpec Sad that this happened. I would rather spend $10-$20 more a month for low carbon heating with a heat pump, where the $ is going to our municipally owned electric utility, rather than to shareholder dividends with enbridge. + electric costs could be reduced with solar panels

@TheSpec Love our air source heat pump that we recently had installed to work with our gas furnace. Would like to eventually ditch gas entirely and save the $~250/yr in monthly customer/ meter charges in favour of all electric. If I were building new, that’s what I’d do.

@jordan26steele @TheSpec You’re thinking mini splits. I had a ducted heat pump installed in my family’s Toronto area home. It works with the gas furnace, which runs below -12 C. Mind you, instead of gas it could be backup electric resistive. The heat pump is great, very efficient and quiet.

@alexbozikovic I worked at Hatch Architects as a student. They have a LARGE in house architecture team. It’s behind the scenes, to supplement their other clients. The residential rail adjacent development nature of this project are not simple! Not many other firms can do that in one spot.

@thisoldplumber a few ?'s on this week's hvac install in Newton. Why the indirect hot water vs combi boiler, cost alone? Also, do all pipes from boiler to pumps and pump to air exchanger get insulated? Could the boiler modulate btu for lower temp for radiant vs mixing valve? Tks

@ScottCaronTOH weird issue with electric baseboard heating. Breaker won't turn on when thermostat is off on BB, But when the thermostat is on, breaker will turn on AOK. Weird... Took lots of troubleshooting. @KevinOConnorTOH @ThisOldHouse
