Trump places Venezuelans between a rock and a hard place.

The house is on fire. The trusses are cracking. The whole structure is about to collapse. Your family is trapped. Firemen stand idly by. They pray for you, but they do nothing. You are surely condemned.

Until one madcap maverick throws up a ladder, to the horror of all around him. And courageously steps into the fire to perform a flawless rescue, saving your family as your house continues to burn to the ground.

Back at the fire station, confused cohorts gather to berate the actions of their madcap colleague, who finds few allies to pat him on the back. Bizarrely, the heroic mission to save lives is obscured by a debate over protocol breaches. The union leader argues that your family should have been sacrificed on the altar of procedure, that you should have found an alternative way out, even with all exits blocked.

The metaphor is not difficult to follow. Venezuelans are overwhelmingly grateful. They have finally been thrown a lifeline, rescued from unspeakable horror, and offered the hope of renewal, even as their country continues to collapse under the unchanged regime of Chavismo.

Yet, the morally corrupted and intellectually confused continue to call for the release of Venezuela's arsonist-in-chief, seemingly unphased by the ongoing oppression at the hands of Venezuelan-Cuban security forces and Chavista "colectivos" (thugs armed by Chavez and Maduro to patrol the streets on motorcycles and inflict extrajudicial retribution).

Perhaps most gallingly, they label the Nobel-winning Maria Corina Machado a "warmonger" – for calling 911 and requesting the fire department.

So, what is behind this new moral logic in the Disunited States of the Upside Down?

Trump.

The man who talks of taking Greenland by any means; who condones the barbaric killing of the Minnesota mom; who promotes election fraud conspiracies; who insults Rob Reiner in death; who lies in every sentence; whose need for worship makes North Koreans blush; who thinks owning a medal means he won it; who has debased US civil discourse to kindergarten primitivity.

A messenger who obliterates his own message.

The messaging on Venezuela ought to have been simple: "a wealthy, friendly neighbour in the hemisphere, with whom we have historically conducted healthy commodities trading, has been destroyed over 27 years by an illegitimate, criminal regime masquerading as a government, aided and abetted by our adversaries in Russia, Cuba, China and Iran. With those adversaries embedded on Venezuelan soil, the security threat posed by this rogue neighbor is no longer tenable. We intend to deliver the democratic transfer of power for which the Venezuelan people voted overwhelmingly in 2024, while restoring pre-Chavez cooperation in Venezuela's US-built hydrocarbon industry and eliminating a nefarious drug cartel."

Instead, Venezuelans now have to confront the Jeremy Corbyns of this world, men who have never expressed a word of moral outrage against the suffering of Venezuelans at the hands of their beloved communist dictators in the Caribbean or the 27 years of resource pillaging by Cuba et al., but rail against this act of hemispheric renormalisation by the madcap Trump.

It is a maddening, disheartening, demoralizing and profoundly absurd position for the good people of Venezuela, who simply wish to enjoy what the Islington socialist Jeremy Corbyn and his like enjoy: to live in freedom. To choose their leaders. To choose their trading partners. To rebuild a decayed nation. To flourish and prosper. To be reunited with their families, their traditions, their landscape, their colours, their flavours, their memories... their way of life.

Who are any of us to deny them that basic human right, even if it should be Trump who, in his madness, manages to deliver it?
