In April 2019, one of the largest food companies in the world sued 9 potato farmers in Gujarat.

The farmers were growing a potato. They had bought the seed in the local market. Most of them had never heard of intellectual property.

The company wanted damages running into crores.

Her name is Kavitha Kuruganti.

She is a farmers' rights activist and the convenor of an organisation called the Alliance for Sustainable and Holistic Agriculture.

The potato at the centre of it is called FL 2027, sold commercially as FC5. It is the variety grown for Lay's chips, because it has low moisture content and fries well. PepsiCo India had registered it in 2016 under a law called the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Act.

That law is unusual, and it is the whole point of this story.

Most countries protect the plant breeder. India's law protects the breeder and the farmer, in the same statute. Section 39 says a farmer is entitled to save, use, sow, resow, exchange, share or sell his farm produce, including the seed of a protected variety.

That right was written in deliberately, because in India seed has been saved and exchanged between farmers for thousands of years, and Parliament decided that a registration certificate should not be able to end that.

PepsiCo sued anyway.

The response was immediate. Farmers' organisations mobilised. Political parties took it up. It became a national argument about whether a company could own a potato.

On 10th May 2019, PepsiCo withdrew all the cases.

That is usually where such a story ends. The company retreats, the news moves on, and the registration that made the lawsuit possible stays exactly where it was.

Kuruganti did not stop there.

In June 2019 she filed an application asking the authority to revoke PepsiCo's registration of the variety altogether. Her argument was that the registration itself was wrong, that documents were missing from the original application, and that granting it was against public interest given the hardship it had caused.

It took 2 years.

On 3rd December 2021, the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Authority revoked the certificate. The order noted that the registration had been granted despite missing paperwork, that there were discrepancies in the process, and that farmers had suffered hardship as a result.

PepsiCo challenged it in the Delhi High Court, and the case has gone back and forth through the courts since.

Whatever the final legal position, one thing already happened and cannot be undone.

9 farmers who could not have afforded to defend themselves were sued by a company worth hundreds of billions, and within a month the company walked away.

Not because the farmers hired better lawyers.

Because 1 woman read the Act properly and knew that Section 39 was in there.

Antirabies vaccine should not be given in the buttocks/bums! It has to be given only in the thighs or shoulders. Any vaccine given in the bums or buttocks has to be repeated.

Rabies is fatal. Do not ignore the advice given. If the bite or scratch was due to a cat or dog, and the cat/dog stayed alive for more than 10 days after the scratch/bite, it is considered that the dog/cat wasn't rabid. So, you can skip taking the extra dose, but remember that the counterfeit one/vaccine given in the buttocks or bums will not be counted as a dose for future purposes. This
10 day rule is not valid for scratches/bites/exposure of wounds to the saliva of the mammal, in case of mammals other than dogs and cats

Now why don't you also quote Pope Innocent VIII who issued an official papal bull, Summis desiderantes affectibus in 1484 - where torture and burning alive of any woman suspected of being non-Christian was officially sanctioned? The official Papal declaration was published in the book Malleus Maleficarum ("The Hammer of Witches") which became the de facto Christian witch-hunting manual of Europe. It allowed Christian inquisitors to prosecute, interrogate by torture, and burn or drown alive any woman that they suspected of heresy or apostasy. Over a half million (some say upto to 4 million) innocent women including widows, midwives, & children were BURNT ALIVE on the "suspicion" of witchcraft over a span of 300 years.

Innocent girls as young as 12 yrs of age were hunted, tortured & burned as witches. Even the 8 yr old daughters of these women victims were burned as they considered a witch's entire "progeny was infected". The innocent women & girls were stripped naked, brutally shaved of all body hair, probed in every orifice for any "hidden objects of witchcraft" then branded with hot irons/stretched on the rack until their bodies split apart & then burnt alive or drowned depending on the whims of the judges.

The Malleus Maleficarum was the hallmark textbook of the Inquisition of Witches in Europe, with the Pope's holy sanction as its preface. It was so popular that the text ran upto 20 editions!

If you have the guts please do tell us how this Christian history fits into your radical idea that a woman has the right to live? Do tell us how that inhuman, hideous mindset which was supported fully by the highest religious sanction of the Church in Europe gave women the right to live in their own body?

At 20, Bittu Tabahi stepped into a polluted river — without gloves, boots or even knowing how to swim — and started cleaning it himself.

On 26 January 2026, the BSc student from Madhya Pradesh began cleaning the Ajnar River near a temple in Biaora, removing plastic and other waste that had turned parts of the river into a dumping ground.

He even began turning puja waste into compost and pooled money with friends to buy tools and dustbins.

The effort cost him around ₹30,000, and at one point, he suffered infections on his hands.

Then his work reached thousands online. Some accused him of doing it for likes.

Bittu’s surname means “destruction.” Today, he is trying to destroy something else: water pollution.
