This Mexican scientist, months before disappearing forever in 1994, published an experiment reporting correlated electrical activity between two brains isolated 14.5 meters apart in separate Faraday chambers, with no known physical connection between them.
Thirty-one years later, Tufts biologist Michael Levin is arguing that brains may act as interfaces to a deeper “Platonic space,” while Stanford’s Garry Nolan has reported unusual neural connectivity in people describing anomalous experiences.
Mexican neuroscientist named Jacobo Grinberg published a paper in Physics Essays. He put two people in separate Faraday cages about 14 meters apart.
One person saw 100 flashes of light. The other didn’t. Yet both sometimes showed matching electrical responses in their brains. He called it a “transferred potential.”
Dr. Michael Levin builds living robots from frog cells and human cells. These cells form behaviours they were never evolved or programmed to do.
Dr. Levin’s working theory is that physical systems act like interfaces that pull patterns from a deeper “Platonic space.”
On Lex Fridman Podcast #486, he literally titled a chapter “The brain is an interface to a hidden reality.”
Garry Nolan at Stanford has scanned the brains of roughly 100 people, many from defense and intelligence backgrounds who reported anomalous experiences.
He keeps finding unusually dense connectivity between the caudate and putamen, sometimes 5 to 15 times higher than normal. In a few cases the feature was already present years before the experiences. Some of it appears to run in families.
And in 1983 a U.S. Army intelligence report on the Gateway Process described the universe as a giant holographic information field and said the mind might be able to “attune” itself to information beyond ordinary senses.
It even floated the idea that consciousness may not be produced by the brain.
None of this is proof. But!
Grinberg’s result was never properly replicated. Levin presents his ideas as a research programme, not settled fact. Nolan’s findings are correlations. The Gateway paper was speculative analysis, not experimental confirmation.
But the structural overlap is hard to dismiss:
Grinberg→ informational lattice, brain as interface
Levin→ Platonic space, organisms as pointers
Nolan→ unusual neural hardware in people who report picking up more signal
