Who is Baal in the Qur’an?

Baal is the name of a pagan idol / false god that was worshipped by ancient Canaanite and Phoenician peoples. He was associated with rain, fertility, power, and domination.

He is mentioned clearly in the Qur’an in the story of Prophet Elijah (Ilyas), peace be upon him:

“Do you call upon Baal and abandon the Best of Creators?”
Qur’an – Surah As-Saffat (37:125)

The meaning is clear:
•Baal = a false god / idol
•His worship represented religious deviation and moral corruption
•The Qur’an mentions him to condemn and warn, not to glorify

Linguistically:
•The word Baal can mean lord, master, owner
•It later became a religious title for an idol
