lal salaam, comrades! thank you to everyone who has been reaching out with concern since i was detained yesterday. i’m home now, but i want to clarify what happened because the violence and chaos we experienced cannot be reduced to a story about a “crowd becoming violent.”

the police cornered us against a wall, with officers on both sides and directly in front of us. they began pushing protesters into one another, creating stampede-like conditions. i was hurt in the process, and many others were in pain and struggling to remain upright. when police block exits, compress a crowd, and push bodies into one another, they create the very chaos that is later blamed on protesters.

we were then dragged towards police vans and detained. a female police officer who was in civilian clothes was dragging women by their kurtis, hair, and necks. multiple people said they were hurt by her. the first two women who were forcibly dragged and detained were, of course, muslim women wearing hijab; their hijabs were pulled off forcefully.

at the police station, officers offered us chai and began recording videos, saying they needed to show politicians visiting the station that they “don’t abuse people.” when we confronted officers about police violence in Delhi and other states on 20 July, the response was essentially: “that was Delhi police. we are mumbai police.”

but chai is not accountability. trying to be polite after detention does not erase what happened beforehand, i have been there before, lol. and the state does not deserve praise simply for refraining from further abuse or unlawful conduct. so stop thanking them ffs.

we were eventually released and returned home. FIRs have now been filed against us.

i also want to make something absolutely clear: i have not supported CJP from day one, and i have received plenty of abuse for saying so. our political disagreements remain. but no disagreement justifies abandoning people to state violence. what we witnessed made one thing painfully clear: when people demand their rights, the machinery of the state can close ranks against them.

we were able to come home. many people targeted by the state have not had that privilege. i thought of Umar Khalid, Gulfisha Fatima, Sharjeel Imam, and countless other political prisoners who have lost years of their lives behind bars while demanding dignity and justice.

since 20 July, this has become bigger than any organisation or leadership. the credit belongs to the people who showed up with their bodies, hope, and courage. a handful of people cannot be expected to carry this burden alone.

we all need to show up. this is the people's movement.

Our demand is simple: Parliament must have a detailed discussion on the brutality unleashed on students yesterday and on the government’s complete lack of accountability for the examination crisis.

Students were beaten for asking legitimate questions about their own future.

If Parliament cannot discuss the future of India’s youth, what is it for?

It’s remarkable how quickly we’re watching the last decade being erased in real time.

The protests against CAA-NRC.

The farmers’ movement.

Countless student movements.

Regional struggles that never trended.

THOUSANDS JAILED.
THOUSANDS DEAD.
Families were torn apart.
Many are still paying the price for standing up to the state.

No protest needs to be diminished to acknowledge another.

But calling this the biggest protest of the last 12 years isn’t just historically inaccurate. It erases the memory of those who resisted long before it became socially rewarding to do so.

That’s the privilege of selective memory.

When the consequences were borne by minorities, farmers, activists and ordinary citizens, many looked away because it wasn’t their fight.

Now that the issue reaches a different section of society, we’re suddenly being told that this is where resistance begins.

It doesn’t.

Resistance didn’t begin today.
You’re only noticing it today.

And that distinction matters.

Because every time we erase the people who came before us, we don’t just rewrite history.

We make the work of those in power easier.
