PM Andrew Holness spoke with the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on Thursday (July 4) about the effects of Hurricane Beryl, attributing the hurricane to climate change. He noted that low frequency-high severity events are becoming more frequent in the region, significantly impacting the economy.
"What we have been doing in Jamaica is to mainstream climate resilience in our budgeting process, in our infrastructure development, and in our national security, so that we can successfully withstand the impacts of these kinds of disasters," said Prime Minister Holness.
As part of his response to disaster preparedness in Jamaica, he has devised a plan which includes improvement to building codes to better withstand disasters and launch intensive information campaigns to ensure people know how to prepare, take precautions, and protect themselves and their property.
PM Holness also commented on the tourism industry, announcing that the expectation is to return to normalcy at our airports by early tomorrow. He highlighted that most of Jamaica's economic industries have been spared, except for the agricultural sector.
