30 years ago, I wrote Task Manager. Today, I broke this PC four ways — CPU, memory, disk, and power — and watched the usual diagnosis pick the wrong suspect.
Sorting processes by CPU is like investigating every crime by questioning the tallest person in the room. You've confused what is visible with what is relevant!
Here's how to do it right!
TMOG 1.0 is out. Free on Windows, Mac, and Linux:

My PDP-11 from the 1980s is now live on the Internet at:

So far it's handled a couple of hundred guests without leaning over, but we'll see how it does! You should get a live process list that updates every 5 seconds.
If you connect from anywhere far away, let me know, I'm curious!
When I was an intern on MS-DOS in '93, one of my last projects was the "StepUp!" upgrade: putting the entire MS-DOS upgrade on a single floppy disk.
Normally, it was 3-4 disks, so saving a couple of bucks on each copy, times a few million copies, would save the company bajillions of dollars. My cut of that? Perhaps a full-time offer if I did it well.
And so, thanks in part to some help from the big brains we had recently acquired from FoxPro, I modified MS-DOS Setup to apply binary deltas instead of shipping entire files.
It was, of course, all done in pure x86 assembly language, as was the style at the time. It's not a hard problem until you have to write it; and you're just learning x86, and there's no Internet yet!
The "rate of churn" in most MS-DOS binaries from one version to the next was usually very low. As a result, the actual delta from the previous version was small, and it all fit on a single floppy.
Bajillions saved! And a job offered :-)
my letter to microsoft requesting a copy of the linux kernel under the terms of the GPL is now in the mail!
i even used one of their very own fonts in an attempt to curry favor
it's expected to arrive wednesday, will update once i get confirmation of delivery
also used a personal check so i will know when (if?) they cash it
now we wait
ZIP file integration with Windows Explorer was first introduced with Win98 Plus! under the name of "compressed folders".
I wrote it, Microsoft bought it, I got a used Corvette!
We updated our style for telephone numbers in 2024 to drop parentheses.
We now recommend the form: 212-621-1500.
For international numbers use 011 (from the United States), the country code, the city code and the telephone number: 011-44-20-7535-1515.
Use hyphens, not periods. No parentheses.
The form for toll-free numbers: 800-111-1000.
If extension numbers are needed, use a comma to separate the main number from the extension: 212-621-1500, Ext. 2.
@AucklandIsland I’m sorry to hear of this. Hang tight to the memories that you have.
I lost 2 parents to dementia. The hardest part was that it unfortunately unfolded in public. I’m grateful that WINZ, police and the local hospital did their best to give my parents dignity in their final years.
