The Daspoort Tunnel🦉

The Daspoort Tunnel, officially known as the Ollie Deneyschen Tunnel, is a road tunnel in Pretoria. It links the suburbs of Claremont and Danville and forms part of the R55 regional route.

The project was proposed by Pretoria City Councillor A.P. Deneyschen to provide a shorter route for Iscor workers travelling between Hercules and the western suburbs. Construction began in 1969, took 40 months to complete, and cost approximately R1.7 million.

The tunnel is 573 m long, 11.6 m wide, and reaches a height of 13.6 m at its entrances. It was designed to accommodate about 6000 vehicles per day, significantly reducing travel times through the Daspoort ridge.

The tunnel was officially opened on 10 August 1972 by Pretoria’s Mayor, G.J. Malherbe. More than five decades later, it remains an important transport link and a notable engineering achievement.
