I've spent a year working on an investigation into New Zealand's hidden air pollution crisis.
Tomorrow morning my story will move in front of the Newsroom paywall. There's an accompanying video and on Monday @TheDetailNZ will run an episode on the issue.
I hope you take a look!
Finally got sense of timeline and the text of the email etc . Others may have connected the dots on this already. But — other than revealing ind mins’ positions (which breaches solidarity etc) — other claims re insider trading ish / disclosure of privileged info must fall away?
It's a little primer of how New Zealand works, that story. (It's exactly how you suspected it worked.) While we're at it, since it came up on RNZ, can we ask @ninetonoon to stop asking lobbyists to comment on politics or, if they must, to release the full list of their clients?
India has banned a BBC TV doco on their PM Modi’s link to the 2002 Gujarat massacres.
I spent time in Gujarat in 2003 for an RNZ radio doco on the massacres (if you want to know about it).
The audio is in this 2015 article re the experience... p https://t.co/PhC2fSTr6v
Submissions on the review of Standings Order are now available on the @NZParliament website. Several share @WainuiomataTrev's view about select committees, suggesting more robust committee scrutiny of the Government. The submission of the Clerk of the House includes this example:
I had the massive honour of translating the Speaker of our Parliament, Hon. Adrian Rurawhe’s introductory remarks in Te Reo Māori to Spanish today at the Mexican senate. (coinciding on the same day the chamber of Deputies voted to ban conversion therapy in Mexico! 🏳️🌈)
Arguably a populist response to migrants/refugees is an aspect of the increase in hard-right politics in Europe. If so, what will happen when climate change causes migration on a vastly larger scale?
Interesting take from @TheStudyofWar “Russian law generally requires that conscripts receive at least four months of training prior to deployment overseas, …Annexation could provide [Putin] a legal loophole allowing for the overt deployment of conscripts to fight.”
In a constitutional coincidence more than one queen died overnight. The Queen of New Zealand is a different queen to the Queen of Australia. Canada’s is yet another one. Etc. They just happen to inhabit the same body. Spooky.
I hope @Te_Papa plans to buy this first version of NZ’s dull flag (from 1899). Yes, we only had the Union Jack till 1902. Imagine if someone was auctioning the Betsy Ross (1st draft US flag)? https://t.co/qQ3dWdaF53
@MutchJessica@1NewsNZ Background: it used to be that MPs hired staff directly and the Parliamentary Service had little control. To protect staff PS can now refuse to provide an MP with staff until they learn to manage them better. It’s one aspect of the Speaker’s anti-bully changes.
