SML-149: Fund Age and Consistency Metrics
A fund's age (how long it has existed) and its consistency (how steady its performance has been) tell you very different things. Both matter when choosing a fund - but for different reasons.
Why fund age matters:
- A fund needs enough history to be judged properly. A fund that is only 1-2 years old has not yet been tested through a full market cycle (both ups and downs).
- Funds with 7-10+ years of history have usually gone through at least one bull market and one bear market. This tells you more about how the fund behaves in tough times.
- A long history alone is not enough, though. Always check if the same fund manager has been running it that whole time (SML-137). A 10-year track record means little if the manager changed 8 months ago.
Why consistency matters more than one great year:
A fund that returns 40% one year and -10% the next year is not necessarily better than a fund that steadily returns 14-16% every year — even if their average looks similar.
Simple ways to check consistency:
- Rolling returns: Instead of looking at just one 5-year return, rolling returns check the fund's return for every possible 5-year period in its history (e.g., 2015-2020, 2016-2021, 2017-2022). This shows if good performance was a one-time event or a repeated pattern.
- Performance across market cycles: Did the fund hold up reasonably well during market falls (like 2020 or 2008), or did it crash much harder than its peers?
- Rank consistency: Has the fund stayed in the top half of its category most years, or does it swing between "best" and "worst" unpredictably?
Why this matters for you:
A fund that is consistently "good" (top 40-50% of its category most years) is often a safer long-term choice than a fund that is sometimes "best" and sometimes "worst." Chasing last year's top performer (recency bias, SML-110) often leads to disappointment, since rankings change often.
Example:
Fund A: Returns of 35%, -8%, 22%, 5%, 28% over 5 years.
Fund B: Returns of 16%, 12%, 15%, 11%, 17% over 5 years.
Both might average close to 16% per year. But Fund B gave a smoother ride with far less uncertainty - which many investors would value more, especially closer to their goal date.

Don't just ask "how old is this fund?" or "what did it return last year?" Ask: Has the same manager been consistent? Has the fund performed steadily across many periods and market cycles, not just one lucky year? A fund with a long, boring, consistent history is often a better sign than a short, exciting one.
