Before you call someone to take down that dead tree, consider who might be calling it home.

A standing dead tree is used by over 85 species of North American birds for nesting, roosting, and foraging, according to the US Forest Service. Cavity-nesting birds can make up 40 percent of the bird community in some forests, and almost all of them depend on dead wood that they either excavate themselves or inherit from a woodpecker.

Woodpeckers excavate cavities in soft, decaying snags. They use each cavity once, then move on. What they leave behind is immediately claimed by everything else: screech owls, wood ducks, flying squirrels, bluebirds, chickadees, nuthatches, wrens, kestrels, saw-whet owls, hooded mergansers, and bats. A snag that a pileated woodpecker worked in one season becomes housing for the next twenty years.

Below the surface, the same tree is an insect hotel. Beetle larvae channeling through decaying wood attract brown creepers, nuthatches, and woodpeckers. Native bees nest in the dry beetle galleries deep inside the trunk. Salamanders and small snakes shelter under the bark as it loosens.

The rule is simple: a dead tree that poses no hazard to structures or people is more ecologically valuable standing than cut. If it's near the house, remove it. If it's at the yard's edge, against the fence, in the back corner somewhere, leave it. Let it fall over on its own time.

The population has exploded and now frequently transmits tuberculosis to cows

But farmers can’t cull the badger population to protect their cattle because the government still considers them to be endangered

Instead of addressing the root cause, the UK has the most batshit testing regime for cattle

There’s no TB vaccine. So the cattle have to get tested. The vets administering the test have to measure welts on the cows neck. Whether a cow lives or dies comes down to a vet trying to discern 1mm on a caliper (reactive vs non reactive).

If a cow tests positive, the farm (already running on super thin margins) is quarantined and starts hemorrhaging money.

Jeremy Clarkson’s cow (pregnant with twins) has an inconclusive test so it’s separated from the herd. It receives a second inconclusive test so they have to kill it (before it can give birth to the twins).

Now here’s the kicker: the autopsy reveals no sign of TB. It was a healthy cow needlessly killed

So - silver lining the farm should be removed from quarantine, right? WRONG - it’s still under quarantine and has to keep testing and can’t sell its beef

Every year, an estimated 100 million-plus mice and rats are used in American labs. Under federal law, they don't even count as "animals."

The Animal Welfare Act is the main law protecting research animals, and it leaves out mice, rats, and birds bred for research. Together they make up roughly 95% of every animal used in science. A 2002 farm bill locked that exclusion into law. So the creatures in nearly every experiment are never inspected by government vets, and in most cases never formally counted. One careful 2021 estimate put the number at 111 million mice and rats a year. Research groups say it's lower. Nobody really knows, because no system tracks them.

For the small share of animals the law does cover, the government sorts them by pain. In the 2019 federal data, most experiments caused little or no distress. But about 1 in 20 landed in the worst tier, called Category E: pain or distress with no relief given. Painkillers are held back on purpose, because in some studies a sedative would change the result. In plain terms, that can mean an infection or poison study allowed to run until the animal dies, food cut until body weight drops more than 15%, or a shock the animal cannot escape.

For decades, the FDA required animal testing before any drug could reach people. And still, more than 9 out of 10 drugs that pass animal tests fail once they reach humans, usually because they do not work in us or turn out to be toxic. A mouse is not a tiny person.

The system runs on animals for a simpler reason. For most of the last century, a living animal was the only whole body scientists could test on, and the rules were built around that limit.

That limit is finally lifting. In December 2022, a federal law made it legal for drug developers to swap in lab tests on human cells, lab-grown clumps of human tissue, chips that mimic a human liver or heart, and computer models. In April 2025, the FDA published a plan to phase out animal testing, starting with one class of antibody drugs, aiming to make animal studies the exception. The NIH then said it would stop setting aside funding only for animal work.

The Oregon ballot fight gets the headlines. The bigger shift is the one moving quietly through the agencies that write the rules.

I loathe sounding like a boomer.

But.

When I was a kid, Home Depot was run entirely by guys who could make a dovetail joint with a pocket knife. Hobby lobby was staffed by grammas who could make a quilt by hand out of old t shirts (not a metaphor - I own one).

Yesterday, we visited Home Depot and were greeted only by people who speak so little English they didn’t know what a respirator was. Not a single one of them have built anything in their life. The fabric desk at hobby lobby had a lady in a hijab who also didn’t speak English and couldn’t tell us the difference between two fabrics.

Tried enjoying a quiet day at the lake today. Thankfully, I got to experience full cultural enrichment while enjoying my peaceful day out (sound on).

Au lieu de recevoir des soins immédiats, le jeune Rocco, qui se vide de son sang après avoir été empalé, est retenu et emmené de force. La blessure aurait pourtant pu lui être fatale. On entend d'ailleurs le garçon dire à la police : « Je ne veux pas mourir ».

Mais Rocco est blanc, tout comme Henry l'était, alors tous les médias s'en foutent.
