S3 didn't disappear after the Savage series! Quite the contrary, they would continue on under VIA with the Chrome series, starting with DeltaChrome. Then came GammaChrome, and...........no one wanted to review it. Until now!

@mdscntstmgm That's really strange. The board goes up to 1.55v which in reality is closer to 1.6v, and that's already really high for air cooling. It shouldn't need more than that for 4GHz. Are your 965s C2 or C3 stepping?
@mdscntstmgm Even raising VID I don't think you'll match 4GHz+ Phenom IIs with the E5800 just because of how little cache it has. If those ASRock 775 boards could take a full Wolfdale like an E8600 it would be a whole different ballgame. Otherwise you're stuck with the pricey Extreme Editions
@mdscntstmgm My AM2NF3 has problems now which I haven't looked into yet, but when it worked the experience was pretty good. My ALiveDual has a quirk where I have to reset BIOS to default and save b4 it will let me OC. It also didn't have as much FSB headroom. Both are better than 775i65g, IMO
I was looking up some history behind the x86-64 transition, particularly around the Pentium 4 time frame, and I found out that Bob Colwell (Pentium Pro chief architect) has been posting on Quora.
Pentium 4 had a version of x86-64 that was fused off.
All I wanted to do was stick a 3dfx Voodoo into a slow Pentium machine and see what happens. But retro PCs will be retro PCs....

So update on last night's shenanigans:
-New board allows CD-ROMs and I got more games including Tomb Raider to work
-Put the P75S back in, Voodoo still wouldn't work in Win95
-Swapped the 2D card...now it works!
-Results in Quake 1&2 are... mediocre. DOS Glide is way smoother

Flabbergasted that Steve Gibson felt it was necessary to release a new version of SpinRite after 20 years, which was useful in the MFM/RLL days, but effectively snakeoil once IDE came out.
For giggles, booting it from floppy on my i9-13900k system with 40TB of attached storage.
