Of all the negative impacts of generative AI, I think the most haunting may be the way it revealed that a significant number of people have seemingly no emotional attachment to the art they consume whatsoever.
For some reason that part in particular is really upsetting to me.
this is because you only look at "harming the environment" like it's an abstract universal aspect and don't see the individual cases of entire communities and so many neighborhoods being polluted, striped out of clean water and air solely due to data centers
"Personalized" art is just pornography, a product aimed at satisfying a base need. Actual art is the opposite of personalized: its beauty lies precisely in that it is the product of another mind, which is why it can be surprising, even revelatory.
