Dear Prime Minister,
In three days, we lost four more women to acts of male violence across Australia.
On July 24, a woman died after a man allegedly drove his vehicle into her car in Martin, Western Australia. That man is charged with her manslaughter.
On July 25, a woman was murdered in her home at Fitzroy North, Victoria. Homicide detectives are trying to locater her killer.
On July 26, a 39-year-old mother of two was killed when a man deliberately drove his vehicle into hers after trying to murder a woman known to him. He killed himself.
On July 26, a man allegedly murdered a woman at her home in Clyde North, Victoria.
This week might seem like deja vu to you. That’s because there were four femicides between July 4 and 7. In that time we lost Jana Armstrong, Lavanya Chappa, Layla Jeffery and a 17-year-old girl.
Nine women and girls were killed in July. Since January 1, we have lost 42 women and 17 children to violence.
Despite all of the deaths, you remain silent. You have no words of anger for the perpetrators, no words of sorrow for the victims and no words of empathy for their families, friends and communities.
Meanwhile, every government across Australia continues under-funds the vital support services we need to keep women and children safe, including perpetrator prevention programs, meaning when men reach out for help they are told the waiting lists are six to 12 months.
We need a Royal Commission into Femicide - for the victims, for their families and communities and for all Australian women and girls. We can’t change the story on femicide by pretending it doesn’t exist.
