This fall’s general election ballot in Minneapolis (Election Day is Nov. 5 with early voting starting Sept. 20) will include a school funding question that, if approved by voters, would invest an additional $20 million to Minneapolis Public Schools annually.
Today, the MN House of Representatives passed, HF 4176, the House Early Education Policy bill, with a 69-61 vote. I authored the bill combining two existing programs for young learners: Voluntary Pre-Kindergarten (VPK) and School Readiness Plus and giving SPPS and MPS districts their own individual Regions. "High-quality early childhood programs are essential for all our youngest learners in Minnesota," said Rep. Perez-Vega. "Research shows that preschool not only gets children excited about learning and prepares them for kindergarten, but also builds their self-esteem, confidence, and critical skills in literacy, math, communication, and creativity."
Superintendent Dr. Lisa Sayles-Adams testified at the Capitol today in support of a bill by Minneapolis Representative Sencer-Mura aimed at fixing Minnesota's special education tuition billing system.
Dr. Sayles-Adams highlighted the burden on district budgets, citing that the current system costs districts like MPS $30 million annually with costs rising by 8 to 9% each year.
In her testimony, Sayles-Adams stressed that districts have no control over these bills, which create competition between schools and families, perpetuating inequalities in education. She urged lawmakers to act swiftly to reform the system for the benefit of all students.

Today @POTUS and @VP announced the American Climate Corps — an initiative to train young people for careers that help tackle climate change.
This is an important step forward, and wouldn't be possible without the organizing efforts of young people across the country.
Congratulations to @MPS_Henry and @MPS_Washburn for being on the list of top-ranked schools in Minnesota.
Criteria used includes college readiness, state assessment proficiency, state assessment performance, college curriculum, and graduation rate.
