Today, as part of our ongoing regional development tour with the Committee on Regional Development and ASALs led by @hon_Lochax we visited Nyando, a region known for its committed rice farmers. These hardworking farmers have long endured persistent challenges.Flooding, poor farm access roads, limited mechanization, and inadequate access to certified seeds, all of which continue to hinder full-scale productivity.
In the short term, we have taken immediate action to support them. Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) has begun mopping up paddy rice to offer market access and stabilize farm incomes. We are also distributing certified rice seeds to ensure better yields in the upcoming planting seasons. These steps aim to cushion farmers as we work toward sustainable long-term solutions.
One of the major interventions has been the construction of protective dykes, a critical move to mitigate the perennial flooding that has plagued Nyando’s farmlands. These dykes are already improving resilience by shielding rice paddies from flood damage and making previously vulnerable land viable for cultivation. This marks a significant stride toward climate-resilient agriculture in the region.
During our engagement, farmers presented a strong case to the committee for investment in irrigation infrastructure, mechanized farming equipment, and improved farm access roads. These are not just requests, they are critical enablers that, if addressed, could bring over 30,000 acres into active production.
Unlocking this potential would significantly boost local rice production and directly contribute to closing the national rice supply gap, especially in light of rising demand and Kenya’s push toward food security and import substitution. The potential socio-economic transformation for Nyando and beyond is immense.
Nyando holds a strategic position in Kenya’s agricultural landscape with fertile plains, committed farmer cooperatives, and a growing ecosystem of stakeholders ready to scale production. By bridging infrastructure and input gaps, and through flood-control measures like the newly constructed dykes, we can convert this region into a national model for climate-resilient, high-output rice farming.
LBDA remains committed to driving agricultural transformation across our region. We thank the farmers for their resilience and the committee for its continued support. Let us now rally the necessary investment to turn this potential into a reality.
