GOT7’s Youngjae, After ‘Friendly Rivalry’ Comes ‘Dream High’… “I have to keep challenging myself”
“My goal for 2025 was ‘not to get nervous.’ I realized that no matter what I do, getting nervous only becomes a minus factor. To prevent that, I believe I have to keep putting in the effort where it’s not seen.”
We met an actor with a solid inner self. These days, he's more often called an “actor” than a “singer” — it’s GOT7’s Youngjae. He was famous even during debut for being someone who worked very hard, and he didn’t neglect that effort even when acting.
In a recent interview with Ilgan Sports, Youngjae conveyed his aspirations, saying, “I wanted to show the public my endless potential.” That’s also why he appeared in Friendly Rivalry, an original drama from U+ Mobile TV that ended on March 6. For Youngjae, Friendly Rivalry was an appealing project that led him to return to drama after three years. In the drama, he played Nam Byeongjin, the main character Woo Seulgi’s (played by Jung Soobin) senior at the orphanage, and a key figure who connects her past and present.
“When I first met the director and read the script, I wondered, ‘Can I really play this kind of character?’ He was a character where good and evil coexist, and he didn’t even exist in the original webtoon. In the end, my conclusion was, ‘Let’s try it!’ The director gave me confidence, saying, ‘Believe in yourself,’ and I also wanted to show the public, ‘I can do this kind of thing too.’”
To create a character not even in the webtoon, Youngjae watched dark-genre films like Believer for inspiration. He came up with his own compromise to distinguish his role from a typical villain — studying and practicing restrained expressions and tone, holding back anger even when he wanted to explode. As for his next drama after Friendly Rivalry, it is still under consideration.
Right after Friendly Rivalry, he started working hard again. He was cast as Song Samdong in the show musical Dream High, and is focused on rehearsals. Even during the interview, Youngjae said, “After this, I have to go straight to musical practice. I’m rehearsing every day except Sunday. Unlike dramas, musicals have no cuts. If you mess up even one moment, everything after that can fall apart. So it demands a high level of concentration.”
Park Jinyoung was the double winner of the night at the 59th Baeksang Arts Awards as Best New Actor in film category as well as winner of the Popularity Award.

@DI0RJ0HNNY@moistshitgi got7 is nothing like 2pm or snsd… got7 has had more comebacks than both those groups and shorter hiatuses than other 3rd gen groups who have members all in one company
they’ve released music literally every single year except 2023-2024 due to military service
