The Kenyan government has suddenly discovered that X needs to have a local office. For accountability. For compliance. To protect children and vulnerable users.

How noble.

The timing though. With 2027 approaching. With a matatu strike happening. With fuel prices making people angry enough to trend hashtags daily. With a population that has historically used X to organise, expose, and embarrass this government into reversing bad decisions.

Now they want a local office.

A local office means local staff. Local staff means local pressure. Local pressure means when the government calls and says take this post down, there is someone in Nairobi who has to answer that call. Someone who has a work permit. Someone who has a family. Someone who cannot afford to say no.

That is not regulation. That is a handle.

Ethiopia blocked social media during elections. Uganda blocked social media during elections. Tanzania has done it. In every case the government had a very reasonable sounding justification prepared in advance.

Kenya's justification is cyberbullying and deepfakes.

The same government that deployed actual online goons to bully critics is now concerned about cyberbullying.

The same government whose propaganda machinery produces coordinated misinformation daily is now concerned about misinformation.

This directive has nothing to do with protecting Kenyans online.

It has everything to do with controlling what Kenyans say before August 2027.

The children are fine. The government is nervous.
