If we’re like cats and have 9 lives I’m probably on 8.99.

It’s been 8 months since I danced with death for a bit. Somehow, someway I fell down 14 stairs. And not like soft carpet stairs. Like hard wood stairs down to a basement with a rock floor.

To this day I have no memory of me falling. I don’t know how or why I fell. The last thing I remember from that day was watching football with my son. The next thing I remember was waking up in the hospital and being completely confused as to why my whole body hurt and I couldn’t see.

The team of doctors tried to explain to me what happened. I barely could hear them as they said “You crushed the side of your face. You have 7 broken bones in your skull including your jaw. You have 2 fractured neck vertebrae and the massive pressure from the swelling has killed your optic nerve. Your bones will heal but you are now permanently blind in your right eye”

What??

I understand now what they were saying but at the time I was in a dark cloud of pain and confusion. I didn’t have any memory of why I was even there and then as they were explaining to me what my physical condition was I was even more confused.

What was even worse was I was restrained to the bed like a criminal. Both hands and ankles were literally strapped to the bed.

Apparently I was unconscious when I was brought into the hospital but I had woken up several times during the previous day in a full rage because I didn’t understand what had happened or why I was there and apparently I was pretty mad about it. So for my safety and theirs I was restrained. I have zero memory of that happening.

It’s been 8 months now. I’ve been told hundreds of times by dozens of doctors that I’m lucky to be alive. And honestly I didn’t feel that lucky. I was actually pretty mad and frustrated and confused as to why this happened to me. I was angry at the world for a long time. And I still have moments. I’m working on it. I’m not great at being grateful.

Life is finite man. You never know when it’s going to change. You have no idea when it’s time.

Here’s the part where people (or AI) preach a moral lesson about living each day like it’s your last…blah blah blah
