the professional photos will come a little later, but for the moment I can confirm that we had a successful Western track of ICMIP in KauaΚ»i on June 21 β which means I'm married now! π
the Tea Ceremony track of ICMIP went well β all submissions were accepted without rebuttal! we'll see how the Western track goes in a couple weeks π
@tlukethompson hey @dieworkwear I have a question about the buttons. the lapels seem really wide and the bottom looks like it fits without pulling too much β is this jacket designed to have the bottom button fastened? or is this just an atypical choice?
@krismicinski of course there's also Covid to consider; current students will have started their undergraduate education at the height of the pandemic, roughly. that must have been hard, but the losses in skills are too great. I dunno what we should do now.
@krismicinski and because the effect seems to be fairly large in scale, I think it's something about their education rather than the individuals. I don't think their lower-level courses are doing enough, but that makes it sooo hard to make good upper-level content.
@satnam6502 there's also a video I remember seeing of Mark Knopfler and Chet Atkins playing together. for all his talent, Knopfler barely seems to keep up with the legend. it's very fun watch, though.
@satnam6502 oh I also meant to mention "Classical Gas" by Mason Williams. it's just such a perfect piece. and, as I wrote elsewhere, I also like Tommy Emmanuel's rendition, which is substantially different (and a little "extra"), but excellent in its own right.
I can understand why some people are upset about a 20 year old story of Cricket, one of the working dogs at our ranch, in my upcoming book β No Going Back. The book is filled with many honest stories of my life, good and bad days, challenges, painful decisions, and lessons learned.
What I learned from my years of public service, especially leading South Dakota through COVID, is people are looking for leaders who are authentic, willing to learn from the past, and donβt shy away from tough challenges. My hope is anyone reading this book will have an understanding that I always work to make the best decisions I can for the people in my life.
The fact is, South Dakota law states that dogs who attack and kill livestock can be put down. Given that Cricket had shown aggressive behavior toward people by biting them, I decided what I did.
Whether running the ranch or in politics, I have never passed on my responsibilities to anyone else to handle. Even if itβs hard and painful. I followed the law and was being a responsible parent, dog owner, and neighbor.
As I explained in the book, it wasn't easy. But often the easy way isn't the right way.
as a dog owner it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to train the dog. dogs don't just magically behave in a certain way because you really want them to, especially not when they're young and being raised by stupid people.
@JAldrichPL wait is it like a treat for making progress? like "if I write a draft of the next section I get some chocolate"? (asking because I do this sometimes and wondered if other people do too)
1/ For several years we've been building Forge, a pedagogically-focused tool to teach formal methods. Here's our first write-up! As the name suggests it's a tribute to Alloy, but we're innovating on several fronts:

@krismicinski@disconcision@joomy yeah I fundamentally don't have any patience for "prompt engineering" nonsense. give me the ability to write per-document or per-template rules like "type β kind, so don't suggest them as synonyms" or something.
