On this day in history, July 17, 1996, TWA 800 exploded at approximately 8:31 p.m. EDT, twelve minutes after takeoff from John F. Kennedy International Airport.

The Boeing 747-100 exploded and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean near East Moriches, New York, United States.

All 230 people on board were killed in the crash; it is the third-deadliest aviation accident in U.S. history.

The investigation concluded that the probable cause of the accident was the explosion of flammable fuel vapors in the center fuel tank. Although it could not be determined with certainty, the likely ignition source was a short circuit.

* Eyes on our next snow chance Tuesday night into Wednesday *

A weak weather impulse is expected to slip by to our south late Tuesday night into Wednesday, offering a chance of snow. This impulse won’t be particularly energetic nor will it be able to draw much moisture from the Gulf of Mexico or Atlantic Ocean. As such, the ceiling for snowfall is limited.

Model forecasts for amounts range from no snow to a few inches. The models that show no snow suggest the system will be too weak and too far to the south for precipitation. Those that give us up to a few inches suggest it will take an optimal track for snow in our area — passing through Virginia.

Here are the range of snowfall forecasts for the Beltway area:

American: 3 to 4 inches
German: 2 to 3 inches
American AI: 1-inch
UKMet, European and European AI: Dusting
Canadian model: None

We lean toward a dusting to an inch as most probable, with the chance of more than an inch just one in three.

Temperatures, in the 20s to low 30s, should be cold enough for accumulation if snow materializes.

8pm EDT July 14: An area of low pressure off the east Florida Peninsula coast (Invest #93L) now has a medium chance (30%🟡2-day / 40%🟠7-day) of becoming a tropical cyclone as it moves westward into northeastern portion of the Gulf.

Regardless of formation, heavy rainfall could produce localized flash flooding over portions of Florida & the north-central Gulf coast through the mid-late part of this week.

A Delta flight with 282 passengers and 13 crew members made an unexpected stop ✈️

The plane, traveling from Madrid to New York on July 6, was forced to land on an island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean due to a mechanical issue. 🌊

The investigation into the Air India flight 171 crash is focusing on the movement of the engine fuel control switches, following an analysis of the Boeing 787′s flight and voice data recorders, aviation industry publication the Air Current reported Tuesday, citing people with knowledge of the investigation.

The people said the available information on the black boxes could not rule in or out improper, inadvertent or intentional actions that preceded or followed the apparent loss of thrust before the aircraft crashed, the Air Current reported.

The preliminary report could be made public Friday, however sources cautioned that plans could change and there was no clarity on how much information would be available in the document, which comes about 30 days after the June 12 tragedy.
