Another milestone paper stemmed from our Habitable Worlds program on Mars evolution. Overall, the emerging picture of a CO2-N2-H2 multicomponent atmosphere, and its redox variants, provides a framework to understand the past climate and habitability of the planet.
@david_kipping The mapping of these words to a number on the X-axis in people’s mind, and a surprisingly broad range of this mapping, is one of the root causes of many not-so-productive debates in science and maybe elsewhere
Search for atmospheres on rocky exoplanets? Aside from the hot rockies having permanent magma oceans (for example, 55 Cnc e☺️), the ones with strong tidal heating would be another promising avenue. We found evidence for an SO2 atmosphere on such a planet: https://t.co/YLkbY0r6vI
We also showed that the detection of OCS and SO2 is likely as long as the envelope is moderately water-rich. Eager to see how these results compare with many ongoing JWST observations!
In a paper submitted to ApJ Letters, my postdoc Jeehyun Yang showed that we can determine whether a temperate sub Neptune has a water-rich envelope through comprehensive atmospheric observations: https://t.co/QzcFQLe0M5
Our paper on 55 Cnc e was published today! We used JWST to measure the rocky planet's thermal emission and found that it should have a substantial, volatile-rich atmosphere. The atmosphere is probably sustained by outgassing from a vast magma ocean. https://t.co/Z9tlZUq6TJ
@AgolEric Thank you Eric. In the broad picture of it, the Spitzer phase curve also suggested an atmosphere. However, there is much detail to be worked out. For example, the amplitude of the Spitzer phase curve was quite large, perhaps related to changing atmos composition and temperature
So, yay, finally we got a secondary atmosphere on an exoplanet! 😁 Many thanks to the awesome team that makes this possible (can't post all the names here but please do check out the paper: https://t.co/Z9tlZUq6TJ)!
Given strong stellar irradiation (and probably winds), the atmosphere must be sustained by outgassing from the magma ocean. Our models of atmosphere - magma ocean coupling resulted in scenarios that are consistent with the data without much fine tuning
We have a new postdoc position on exoplanet atmospheres (any combination of data analysis, forward models, and retrievals): https://t.co/RwoeR2WPFV Join us for an exciting and rewarding time to develop your science/career, with the opportunity to work on many JWST observations
3/14 not too bad but admitted not as thrilled as last year😅 A huge congratulations to @MarioDami who got PI programs approved two years in a row, in addition to having been a super postdoc!
This position allows you to work on both spectral retrieval and mission science yield modeling, and offers exposure to both the science and technology and program/project management communities at @NASAJPL
