I've been wondering why the sycamore tree (Acer pseudoplatanus) is often referred to as 'just a sycamore'?
Often heard this said in quite disparaging tones and yet it's such a beautiful and useful #tree . Good for furniture making, provides food for wildlife & pollen for bees.

Newly planted trees need to be watered regularly over the summer months if they are going to become established and thrive.
If you have a tree outside your house, or one that you pass on your daily walk, then you can help.
According to the Met Office rainfall between January and June 2022 was the lowest since 1976. Established mature trees are able to find their own water. However, it is recommended that newly planted trees are given 50 litres of water per week during the summer months, for the first three years after planting.

I recall photographing this #Magnolia delavayi @WestonbirtArb through the viewfinder of my Mamiya RB67 #film#camera & waiting for the breeze to stop to take my exposure!

I'm honoured, with several colleagues, to be asked to contribute a favourite #photograph from a past issue with a few words. https://t.co/1vg6mRhoRP Here's my choice. It was published in issue 101, April 2005
Well worth the dash to @kewgardens on Friday for a burst of #botanicillustration inspiration at the Shirley Sherwood #Gallery. New exhibition of The Wonderful World of Water Plants features latest work of #artist Lucy Smith @palmsmithy and that of the late, great #MargaretMee.
Time off in the Trossachs where the pace is slower and there is still time before Spring emerges in all it's glory. Looking through the birch woodland to Ben Venue from a favourite walk near Callander.

The largest organism on earth!
Pando, a grove of quaking aspen trees in Utah, is thought to be the planet's biggest and oldest living organisms. Its 40,000 trees are genetically identical and connected by a single root system, covering 106 acres.

Autumn sunlight shines through the leaves of an #oak, Quercus robur, in the #garden , So why do oak #trees keep their leaves through much of winter? It's a process called marcescence which is the retention of dead plant matter that is usually shed.
